Electric Tacoma coming

I don’t know if I would say easily, but yes it’s very possible, just need to plan your route well. With gas, I can take detours and almost not have to worry about not finding gas.

 

Love to see it. Better low end torque? Better for the earth? Better for our lungs? Sign me up. And the charging infrastructure will explode when demand ramps up. I was reading an article recently that said once EV's make up 30% of cars on the road it's going to cause an exponential decline in gas vehicles sales and support services.
Also the prospect of mounting a few solar panels on an EV Taco and being able to really go off the grid for a few weeks on end with limited driving is extremely appealing. I wonder if we'll be able to convert our gas Tacos to electric?

 

You can convert anything really. Plenty of DIY parts out there but no Tacoma crate setups yet. That's another segment that will explode. EV west and Electric GT have parts and Electric GT made a few Toyota landcruiser EV's Their crate motors look like V8's

I can see it now. The electric Tacoma comes to market, they grow and expand into the wild. Next thing we know, little meteorites start imploding like nuclear bombs, creating fires that can't be extinguished, all over the face of the planet.

I would definitely be interested in a Hybrid version. Based on a 2025 timeline, full EV range may be drastically improved making it a much more interesting option.

Not sure how I feel about this one. Maybe I’m just old school. But I’m not really big on the hybrid/electric push. Infrastructure will have to change big time as well to eventually phase out gas stations and convert them to “charging stations.” Working in the auto industry I can tell you that hybrids are way more expensive to fix when stuff goes wrong when it deals with the hybrid systems at least. What about all the mechanics that will now have to learn a completely new field all over again?! Also it’ll probably put your local mom and pop shops out of business because they won’t be able to afford the new tools or auto makers won’t release anything to them to fix stuff. Cars are burning damn clean now. And here’s the big question... where’s all these batteries going to go when they need replaced?!

Curious to what year? We own a 2012 prius with it getting up in milage at 170k....so far no issues other than new brakes, and the regular oil changes.

No thanks I’ll stick with petrol . The cost of replacing those batteries is stupid expensive and typically have to be replaced every 7-10 years or so depending on the brand of battery .

 

Not true. At least for Tesla the batteries are designed to last 500,000 miles.

 

Dear god, I hope Toyota doesn't try to turbo the Atkinson cycle engine. Their engineers can't tune the damn thing to save their lives in N/A form. I'd hate to see what happens when/if they tried forced induction.

Genuinely asking: Is this REALLY the case? Last I read up on the issue (it's been a while), these batteries require a lot more energy to produce and as a result produce a lot more greenhouse gasses, plus they take up more space in landfills and have to be replaced more often than engines.

Designed to last and actually last are two very different things. The president of my last company had a few Teslas and had a handful of issues with the batteries. It's gotten better, but I'm confident he did not get 500k out of the batteries. And I'd say he drove it like a typical Tesla Model S owner would as well.

 

So does Tesla warranty the batteries up to 500k ? I don’t see Toyota giving you a warranty that long lol .

 

I still say, that until they come up with a viable alternative to gas, I will stick to my gas truck/car. Right now, I can drive as far and as long as I want, only pulling into gas stations, filling up, and be on my way in less than 10 minutes. Ya' can't do that with an electric vehicle. As for a hybrid, well, considering the extra price because of all those batteries in there, that will go bad before you make up the difference in the higher price, I can't see doing that either. Probably the best idea I have seen that is actually a viable alternative to gas, would be to go with nuclear power, such as is done with the current aircraft carriers and submarines. They can run for decades without the nuclear power having to be refueled. So that to me, is a pretty good option, but the dang environmentalists won't like that...

 

I would be interested in a hybrid "IF" they had solar panels. No way I am going offroad to the middle of no where without charging. Also driving long range is impractical IMO full electric if you have to stop for hours to charge.
