It's well documented that some stock trucks suffer from a miss or stutter on lower octane. The idea that "my truck doesn't have this issue so it must be false", or "anything other than 87 is a waste" is tiring. Not necessarily directed at you, but it pops up every time there is an octane thread. Happens with some issues here more than others, but you don't see it when someone gets a flat tire or such.

My truck at 60k miles has missed and pinged since new on 87. Dealer tells me it's normal, 93 makes it go away. It doesn't ping or miss on 89 either, but Costco doesn't do 89.

    Yours doesn't? I'm jealous.

It seems to be ok for most modern vehicles. I thought I'd track it for a while and see how the mileage is if it ever comes available.

Once again; think of it this way. Ethanol has a higher octane rating, right? Why doesn’t that give you more power or mpg? Because octane does not equate at all to power/quality/energy density.

The manual states, 'minimum 87AKI(91 RON)'.

The Tacoma was tested using the Tier 3 fuel standard; 91AKI; E10.

Why test with higher octane then recommend lower octane . It's just me but my vehicles have always ran better on premium and I'm at sea level

85 is regular where I live because of high altitude. That’s what it gets.

    You'd have to ask Toyota.
IIRC, Toyota states 91 AKI for other models of the 2GR engine, so...
The "engine" technical pdf states 91 octane, but doesn't specify if it's RON or AKI.

The '16 Tacoma was one of the first to test using the Tier 3 standard. Tier 2 test fuel consisted of 91 AKI E0.
Tier 3 wasn't slated to take effect until 2021 and has since been rolled back to 2025.

I think what he is talking octane doesn't directly affect mileage. This is true directly, but kind of misleading. Octane rating is a combination of measuring an engine under load and an engine under no load. The average of the two numbers is the octane rating. If an engine is designed to run at 87 octane, no amount above that will improve mileage. That is a true statement. This is true under perfect lab conditions, a car cruising down a flat highway at 50 mph with 60 degree outside temp. We don't live in a perfect world. We have 100 plus degree days and we have mountains. We have trailers we pull, and we have shitty gearing that keeps our engines from operating at their ideal rpm, which increases load on the engine. All these factors affect the need for higher octane. Higher octane rating allows higher loading. If you will be pulling a trailer or heavily loading a truck or off roading a lot in high temp areas, more octane increases the ability to resist knock under load before forcing the ecu to change timing to prevent the knock. just my take on it.

Add to that, the fact that the rating of most gasoline at a gas station is likely not what is in their underground tanks. There has been many testers who have gone to gas stations and tested ratings and found them below what is stated. I always go to high usage gas stations. That lone station in the middle of nowhere that has few customers probably has old gas which means lower octane than stated.

Isn't 91 aki european? This would translate to 87 in the states.

    AKI is (RON + MON)/2

In europe, they just list RON.

Correct, but can we all agree whatever perceivable difference in mileage due to bad gas or external factors affecting timing that is related to octane do not offset the cost difference between high/low octane gas?

I will disagree. In my FJ I have been running nothing but 91 since new (15yrs) in that time I have run regular fuel 2x. Both times the performance loss was very noticeable: less power, harder start, rougher idle, drop in mpg. IMO in the long run is where you see the savings in longevity and maintenance.
