1/2 Inch more sidewall - can't calibrate the TSS camera?

So over the course of the last three weeks I've had to have my windshield replaced. Installer calibrated it at the time of install and about a week later I got all sorts of nastygrams regarding system failures related to the camera. Brought it to the dealer and they claimed the "axial gap" was too far off and recommended OEM glass (the windshield was PGW). Brought it back to the installer and determined there was an issue with the glass itself. Ordered a Pilkington windshield (the same company who has their name stamped on my door glass) and got that installed. Still can't calibrate the camera. This time it was determined the second windshield was defective and now I'm awaiting approval from my insurance co. for OEM Toyota glass. However it was brought up (as they are brand new and still have the nubs on them) that mounting 265/70/17 tires in lieu of the factory spec 265/70/16 (a difference of half an inch between the two) is enough to through the calibration off. While I understand there are tolerances, I find it very difficult to believe that half an inch is able to bring down the whole system. The difference between a brand new tire and a worn tire can be a 1/2" alone; even on the same tire. Factor in brand new springs versus broken in ones, a heavier battery to weigh down the front end more; I mean am I wrong?

What say you TW, am an I idiot for going to a slightly larger tire size or is it just a legitimate issue with the aftermarket glass?

That seems like an oddly specific issue, but a lot of the folks who offer tuning services also do the TSB work. One of the TechStream functions is the Zero Point Calibration that can be done. Who knows? It might work out better than at the dealer? Just hit up a local on the Feelers list and give it a shot? It certainly seems like your dealer is throwing parts at it and draining your wallet.

The OE windshield is a Toyota / Pilkington branded. I had mine replaced with a Pilkington branded (non-Toyota) one. The trim band is a bit different, but it seems to be the same quality. I'm non-TSS-P though.

Thanks for the input bud...luckily the installer is taking care of all the part and labor on their dime (a pretty highly recommended "mom and pop" auto glass shop local to me). I guess I'm just concerned that with the luck I'm having with defective windshields I should go and buy a scratch off lotto ticket lmao.

When the OEM glass comes in if it's still trouble I guess I'll give a tuner a shot. They (the auto glass shop) said if it still isn't working and can't be calibrated they'll have the dealer look at it, also on their dime so hopefully it'll get worked out eventually.

I can't comment on the glass part, as I haven't had to replace the windshield, but the tires shouldn't make a difference. I have tires that are one size up and haven't had any problems and there many others that have gone up a size. Like you said, worn tires, new springs, even loading the bed would cause problems if the TSS camera was that sensitive.

The 1/2" from the tires is not the issue, it's the way the camera was re-mounted on the new windshield. Between my lift and tires, my Taco sits 4" higher than it used to - I have zero issues with the TSS/camera/radar system, nothing was ever adjusted.

I work in a body shop . Chances are the glass guy slipped and made contact with the wiring for the camera causing an intermittent short .You can always pull down the front lip by the sun visors slightly and look with a flashlight around your rear view mirror . I have a pre tss 3rd gen so I'm not sure how it's mounted and the wiring is run . But I thought I would share my hunch . It's not the tires . Judging from when the issue started im leaning heavily towards damaged on installation .

So I finally got my OEM glass (ironically the only difference is the Toyota above where it says "Pilkington"). The glass installer said they were finally able to calibrate it by raising the calibration targets by, surprise surprise, a 1/2". No warnings are being thrown now, LDAS and Auto highbeam function like they should but I feel like the pre collision system is still off. I aimed for a couple of garbage cans and got no warnings to brake so I'm not sure if it's working correctly yet. I still may take it into the dealer and have them double check the calibration...

That is the crazy thing with those systems, unless you can get a video readout like in a Tesla, it is impossible to know if they do anything. Maybe use a sheet of fabric or paper and try to run it down. LoL!

It's not like a Tesla is FOOLproof either.

There's some shenanigans here. When I had my truck in when it got hailed on @ stock height, they pulled the windshield and reinstalled it with no issues (with the TSS at least). I got it back and there was a very annoying, very random rattle. I tracked it down a week or two later to be the cover that goes over the windshield camera. There's a clip that's glued to the windshield that the cover attaches to and the glass guy busted it when reinstalling the windshield. So I ended up taking it in and you have to replace the whole windshield for that stupid little plastic piece. Luckily that was on the glass guy's dime because them bitches are mucho expensivo. Between the time the windshield was pulled and reinstalled and then later replaced I had put on the lift and tires so it sat a good bit higher. Never once was there any issues with precollision or anything else, so it's certainly possible to recalibrate it for different conditions. Then after all of that I swapped on a pro grille and never recalibrated it and it's still been fine.

For what it’s worth, I have a 2” lift and 33” tires and I have had no issues with the sensors in my 2020.

I had my windshield replaced yesterday. The shop would not do the recalibration because I have a 2" lift and aftermarket wheels tires (1/2" same as OP). Said their equipment would only work on a stock vehicle (whatever ). I noticed that it was mentioned in a previous post in this thread that if they did not disconnect the camera no recalibration was necessary. I did notice the camera stuff dangling from the wires when they had the windshield out so I am assuming that they did not disconnect it. Everything seems to work as it should and I have no warning lights so I'm calling it good. I really don't want the hassle of having to listen to the dealer give me a bunch of shit for modding the truck.
BTW, thanks Flash1034 for mentioning that. I'm really starting to hate this TSS shit!

Lifting the vehicle doesn't cause any issues with the system, it's CALIBRATING the system with a lifted vehicle that causes issues. I have a stock suspension trd pro on 33s with a cracked windscreen and no one will touch it. Toyota said they would calibrate it for me if someone else changed the glass, but no one will change the glass because for liability reasons, they can't let me leave without calibration. Which is dumb cuz in an accident, even if a safety feature failed, liability is always on the driver, not the vehicle if it was functioning fine. I even asked if I could air down to stock height and they said that wouldn't work. No idea how that wouldn't work but okay. Then I asked if they could move the calibration targets up and they said no it doesn't work like that. Lmao yes it does. I think they just don't want any liability at all and won't touch it. My only option is to put on factory wheels from someone. If I had a suspension lift I'd be completely out of luck. Super annoying to deal with.....
