255x85r16 on 16x8 with -10 offset ??

Hi All,

I'm looking at wheels that are 16x8 with -10 offset and 4.1" backspace, and want to run them stock (actually, I want a suspension, but I can't find anything below $2000 (including labor) that won't worsen the ride quality when I load up the rear with camping stuff). I have a ~$2000-$2500 budget right now and my stock tires are pretty much worn to the ground so I HAVE to buy new tires, which is an unfortunate limitation. I also don't want to install the suspension myself because 1) I've never done one (even though I'm mechanically inclined and probably could figure it out, 2) I don't have a buddy to help me, 3) I tore my AC joint and will likely need shoulder surgery soon.

So here are the options I'm looking at:

• Did not find a good suspension option. Don't want a spacer/block lift on front or rear.
• Black Rhino Armory Wheel, 16x8 with 6 on 5.5 Bolt Pattern - Gunblack - ($900 for a set of 4)
• $351+ BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 Tires
  LT255/85r16 BFG KM3s - ($1050 for a set of 4) - EDIT: I'd probably get Cooper S/T (32.8") or Toyo MTs (33.3") instead because these aren't being made anymore. They're about the same price.
• BF Goodrich LT265/75R16 Tire, All-Terrain T/A KO2 - 67179 - ($761 for a set of 4)

My thought process is that a 255/85r16 will probably be my chosen tire when I have a lift anyways, bc I expect the diameter fills the wheel space well, and ibc it's lighter than the 285s which seem overkill. So this way I can use my budget to have a sick looking rig with great tires that I'm not looking to replace once it's lifted.

Do you think a Skinny will fit on a stock TRD Off-Road with a -10 offset? I've read about people doing it on the stock OR wheels (+25mm offset) but the -10 offset on these makes me concerned that it'd be no different on the exterior clearance and will rub on the cab mount. I understand this can be a problem with 285s (33") and that the +25mm offset of the stock OR wheels help the skinny sit IN the wheel well all the way to the back, but since the stock OR wheel isn't as wide (16x7 instead of a 16x8) the spacings for each offset number changes and now I'm lost again. Would anyone consider this option? Or am I being an idiot for spending my money on wheels when I can buy suspension parts and hopefully find a cheap installer? I don't want any kind of block/spacer lift because of the performance so I can't imagine a lift kit that qualifies but is still < $2000 installed.

Alternatively, would I be better of getting a 265/75r16 because of the availability of a KO2 and the better price? I'm concerned that I'll be left wanting more because it's not that much more than stock and I'll probably still be trying to lift it down the road. Clearance has been an issue in the past and that's also why I like the skinnys.

If I did get a suspension instead (and upped my budget), I looked at the $100

$1,260 ReadyLift 3" Front & 2" Rear SST Lift Kit - 69-5531

0 Readylift (3" front, 2" rear with 6112s) but didn't like the fact that it came with a rear block instead of a performance lift. I load up my truck heavy on occasion and I already have sagging issues. Is there a good cheap rear option to pair this with? My other favorite option is the (~$2000)or pairing it with something like ($90) but that's a bit more expensive and comes with both front coils and rear shocks. Is the Readylift the kind of thing where you can't go wrong because you can always upgrade later without any sunk cost?

 

I have recently tried to pick up a set of those 255/85/16 KM3's and they don't seem to exist anywhere. While they are listed as an available size I heard from a guy at Michelin that they have no eta for when they will produce another run.

If you find some I'd love to know where!

 

Guess I'd have to settle for the Cooper S/T MAXX or the Toyo MTs! I like them both so I guess that's not the end of the world.

 

I can find them on tire rack with shipping to Denver . It's a special order with pending delivery date but still.

 

Just be aware that the Toyo MT’s are 33.5 and the Coopers are 32.8....

i had the Toyo’s on my 2018 TRD off road with the Eibach lift and stock wheels. No rub anywhere when flexing as much as it could on trails

Since you have a cap/shell sagging the stock leaf pack you would be better off with an add a leaf instead of the blocks

 

Call them, they'll call BFG (Michelin) and you'll get the same spiel I did.

Huge bummer. I was all set to buy them 2 weeks ago. Now I'm just gonna wait and see if they ever go back into production.

 

I'll settle for Toyo or Cooper if I go the Skinny, but still wondering about the wheels (if they fit at all) and comparing vs. stock wheels with some kind of suspension instead of spending the $$ on wheels.

 

Thanks - I did read that the Toyos are the biggest of the 33s, which exponentiates my concerns with the offset. Maybe the cooper would be better for that reason.

Good call. I definitely think the rear add-a-leaf will be the way to go when I finally decide to pursue that, maybe even with a new rear shock. But that seems to reinforce that I should wait on that for now and see what my best option is stock.

 

I have 255/80/17s on stock 4runner wheels with -10mm offset. I had to remove the inner fender liner but haven’t done anything else. With an ARB bumper and a winch with rope I only have very infrequent rubbing and it’s usually because I either was going too fast or wasn’t paying enough attention. I hunt and scout a lot, am often back on little-used forest roads, and watch the road only enough to stay in it when I’m looking for animals and such.

Wait, wait, wait. I think I’m getting the offset of my wheels mixed up with those on a camper project I did recently. It appears that my current wheels are 15mm offset, so I’ll butt out.

255s do fit easier but my 285 70 17 KO2s C load are only 51lbs vs 58 lbs or more for 255s.

 

Dang, that's a good point..... I didn't realize the 285s were lighter. I guess the extra sidewall/diameter on the skinny makes a difference too.

285 wasn't even in the cards for me unless I go for some suspension upgrades too..

 

The 285 KO2s are lighter because they're C rated and the KM3s are E rated. The E rated tires are typically 10ply while the C would likely be 3ply

 

Yeah pretty much all 255s are E load which are good if your dealing with nuclear blasts or lava rock. C load comes on the Raptor so it should be fine for my Tacoma.

I have 255/85r16 Toyos on 16x8 0 offset. I’ve had them rub the plastic flare very slightly only twice when flexing and stuffing the wheel with my 270lb hunting buddy in the passenger seat.

I have a 2” coil over lift which doesn’t matter when you’re off roading it.

You will be very close with that combo but you might clear. You won’t know until you try! Every truck is slightly different.
