Fuel pump recall on the way

I never said toyota would do it that way. Just stated that DCSB you have to drop the tank, ACLB DCLB you can come in from the top if you wish.

 

So i checked on my dash cam from the time they Lifted the truck at the shop till they lowered the truck.... Took them 45 minutes from start to end.

45 minutes of actual labor and it was a total of a 7 hour wait from drop off to pickup

 

Okay just an update.
I took my 2019 Tacoma in today for the new fuel pump. They said to bring it in with 3/4 of a tank gas or less. Brought it in with 5/8's. Job took a little less than 2 hours.
I can honestly say the truck runs better. I don't drive a whole lot even less this past year with covid. Truck has just shy of 13,000 miles on now 2,500 of that was one trip to Arizona last year pre-covid. I've put barely 5,000 miles on the truck since that trip.
I have the V-6 in my truck and never noticed any issues on the trip. But over the last year I thought I could feel the truck running rough at times on the highway. I blew it off on the way I drive. Never much more than 60MPH. That seems to be the sweet spot for MPG for me. As long as it isn't windy I get 27+ MPG.
Driving at that speed though puts the transmission in "hunt" mode at the slightest incline. I just thought the transmission was the issue for the feeling of shuddering, roughness, etc.
Well it turns out it was the fuel pump. The drive home, approx., 60 miles, it felt like a different truck it runs way smoother. I got 27+ MPG on the drive home.
While I was waiting at the dealership I did some more research, online, on the fuel pump issue. When I got the recall notice they made it sound like they used fuel pumps that pumped at too low a pressure. Different articles I read said the Denso fuel pumps are defective. The impellers are made of inferior materials and don't hold up and can even break apart. So i guess that would cause low fuel pressure just not the way I was thinking based on how the recall notice was worded.
Well anyhoo, it is fixed now. It would have been nice if Toyota corporate had offered some type compensation for the time, gas and inconvenience of getting this fixed. A gas card, free oil change or something. I live 120 miles round trip from the dealer. So between the drive and repair time that pretty much wastes a day and at my age every one counts. I don't think it should be up to the dealership to smooth things over. It wasn't their screw up.
I might write Toyota corporate just to see what kind of response I get. This is my first Toyota. I had a Subaru in the past and they were always good about compensating you when their was a recall or even work done just out of warranty. They covered my gas with proof of receipt and made good on a little over $700 in repair work, leaky valve covers and a wheel bearing at less than 60,000 miles. It was still a better vehicle than the 2018 Chevy Colorado I traded in for my Tacoma, now there was a pile of junk. But that's another story.

 

Had the recall done a week ago and today put it to the test. Put over 120 miles on the truck today, 100 of it on the highway. Ran great.

 

I have 8,500K on my 2019 off-road that I was going to take on a 4 hr vacation with hours of driving on vacation and then the 4hr drive back and now... I am contemplating on taking the truck that far. ARGGG. WHAT TO DO>>>>>>

 

Why the gas smell you think?

 

Idk i had no issues with my truck on long distances, i have the recall now. Im more scared to take it in to my local dealer because of there incompetence.

For my 18k mile services the tech left the oil fill nozzle above my truck and for some strange reason the valve was open......


They spent like 4 hours cleaning and preasure washing the engine bay and windshield

 

techs driving my shit with gas gloves or pants or something, was annoyed but went away after a bit. They turn off my dash cam aswell hehe sneaky techs think they clever

 

i did a short test drive on the highway but i got caught up in stop and go traffic. I will try to see if there is any difference in highway cruising next time i am on a lengthy drive as well

 

i took my 19 OR from MA to MD. 600 mile round trip drive. Twice. I was worried in the back of my mind but no failures on me. You will def have the peace of mind after the repair

 

Any difference in feel on the highway?

 

Mine smelled of gas when I picked it up too. I drove around with the windows open for the next couple of trips and it dissipated. My thought was that they had the windows open when they dropped the tank. No big deal.

 

Not that I noticed.

 

Well, my recall work took less than two hours, but I had a loaner ('21 Rav4), so I didn't mind. So far, so good. Now the request for a transmission flash on my 2019 didn't happen. Service Manager called me, said he has a 2020 Taco and it behaves the same way. If I want more power, use the ECT button (thanks asshole, I do, all the time). He did offer that there is a bypass available on ebay I could buy to keep the ECT as always on...I know that. Oh well, still love this truck.

Dealer took 5hrs to do mine. There was a gas smell when I got back in the truck but it wasn't strong and it faded quickly.

 

I finally received the notice that there's a fix for my fuel pump so since I'm at the dealership for my wife's Highlander's 6 month care and a recall, I had them scheduled the Tacoma for next Saturday. No mention of how low they want the tank and said it would take 4 hours.

 

I just had the fuel pump recall done on the 18 SR and it was hard to start the day after I picked it up. I was out running around, went to start it and it just cranked. Enough so that I stopped, pulled the key out, put it back in and cranked it again and eventually it started. The next stop it was hard to start, but better. I then drove to the gas station and put in some 93. Today it seems fine. Odd...

 

So here’s my experience with my Double Cab with AluCab canopy camper.

Took it in the evening (the day) before the appointment. Was checking in and chatting with customer service person and their supervisor. Super nice folks. They were asking about where I camp, etc. As I handed the keys over I mentioned the camper keys were on the ring in case they needed access and I said I guess you just drop the tank.

Both of their mouths dropped and they told me they lift the bed slightly to make the repair. I said it wouldn’t be possible with the camper and that they should be able to drop tank. They said they’d have to confirm with techs in morning and get back to me.

In morning a different customer service called (also very nice) but said they need to lift the bed to make the repair. I insisted they could do it by dropping tank and they said no. I asked repeatedly, “Are you saying you can’t or you won’t?”. They insisted they can’t. I said okay, thank you and please put that in writing on my paperwork and email a copy. They said they would within the hour and I said I’ll pick it up and have to try another dealer. They said to come back and they could do it once removed.

Didn’t get an email from them with the info but a couple hours later they called and said their master techs we’re trying to see if they could repair without lifting the bed but unsure. They’d need the truck longer if so & I said no rush on my part (its a second vehicle).

Next day they called to say the master tech (apparently with decades of experience they said) had come up with a workaround and it would be done later that day.

Picked up the repaired truck and apart from some fumes in the cab it seems all good.

Figured I’d share it in case anyone else with a camper or rack gets told it needs to come off so they can lift the bed.

 

Work around my ass....
You drop the tank.
The advantage of lifting the bed is your not opening 5 connections of fuel and
Emission control.
Lot less chance of a evap problem or fuel leak.
I don’t like to lift the bed.
I have done it when customers insisted of filling the tank to the brim
across the street and bringing it right in after when we say a 1/4 tank.
Your gonna get a fuel smell.
