    Guys, time for a PSA.

If you are thinking of buying ANYTHING from DR Power, just dont.

Since Generac (a company I thought i liked) bought them a year or two ago they've gone to complete 100% dog shit. I've had more issues with their brush cutter than I can remember and its a year and a half old. Was in the "shop" all last year for a problem they knew about but couldn't fix. Didn't extend my warranty at all. Now I'm trying to run it and the guy who had it (only service agent in the area and he DIDNT EVEN KNOW HE WAS ONE) left it fucked up and even worse shape.

DR power does nothing, does not care and you are told to fuck yourself. They did this with some stair metlers I got for my parents a two years ago as well.

Luckily I got a shit ton of work done my first year with it where I "made my money back" vs hiring someone, but this thing should have easily lasted me 15-20 years no issues as long as I kept it up.

Giving it 1 last shot to fix it, then I'm fucking done and getting a billy goat.

When I was doing research on a whole house generator about three years back I talked to an acquaintance who was a service manager for a company that sells mostly commercial generators. They do some whole house and we had a good conversation about them. He told me his company stopped selling Generac a few years earlier because their quality had dropped off and they were hard to get parts for.

In general anything Generac related has seemed to go downhill over the past several years.

We bought a very expensive 15kw Generac back in 2007 which is already junk. Apparently needs a new motor. Just a few weeks ago replaced it with a Honeywell. My advice to anyone buying a whole house genset, buy once, cry once. The Honeywell costs more than a decent economy car, but you can tell it's way above and beyond what the Generac was.

We bought a Briggs and Stratton Fortress and it's been trouble free for 3 years. Of course, this has guaranteed no power outages in my neighborhood since then. Well, actually two, one for about five hours and one for about 12 hours.

The only things I can't run off of the generator are the electric dryer and stove.

No gas on our street, so we had to have propane tanks installed, at about $1,000.00. Electrical cost $1,700.00, but that included replacing the service from the street, meter box, wiring the transfer switch.

All in, it was around &7,700.00 dollars which was actually a bit less than the estimate.

The friend I mentioned earlier told me that I should hire my own electrician because if the company provided one, they'd add 20% to whatever his bill was. I did and it worked out great.

I also have the service contract, but if you're really comfortable with small engine repair you might not care about that.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. the Generac we bought was like 10 grand- just the unit, not including the pad and the install. Very disappointing that it failed even though it saw some very hard use. We had it maintained professionally every year too. The maintenance company we used said Generac is basically big box store, homeowner quality now. They said get a Kohler or Honeywell true commercial unit and with good maintenance like we have been doing it will truly be a lifetime genset. But beware, the Honeywell was close to 20 grand without the install. It can run the main house and guest house without even knowing the power is down.

I spent months doing research on this project. Initially, I was looking at a portable generator, but after I figured out what it would cost to buy it, then build a shed to house it when I didn't need it, then that it would run for less than a day on a tank of gas, and of course my wife wasn't going to be able to pull it out if I wasn't around when the power went out, I went with the whole house unit.

I know a guy who had his generator stolen out of his garage, so you have to figure on securing a portable generator too.

We have a Honeywell that runs our business. Our side building has a generac that’s been good for 5 years now. But I think you are right they suck now.

So now do I cancel my order and wait another three months or roll the dice?

anyone a fan of Mat Cauthon?

We've got a 100 KW Kohler at work that was installed in 1997. I think it was originally diesel and was converted to natural gas at some point along with the boilers. It starts right up for every test and outage and runs everything it should, though there is a maintenance contract on it and I think it's serviced twice a year.

Yeah, I would cancel man, the Generac we bought back then was supposed to be the very tip top of the line for the Generac stuff. And 14 years later that thing is garbage.

they sell kohler so I'll see what the deal is, I already have a generac switch at the box which makes me hesitate a little cause then I eat all that.

We've had one at my parents place for 30 years with nothing done most years and its a rock. We have one at our business thats been good for 5 years with one minor thing that needed to reset. I'm gonna call the guys I ordered from and see whats up though after lunch and a little more outside work.
