Agreed, I'm curious about the quality -- I'm not doubting it at all, but for $290 for a hood (3rd gen) I'd wonder how much fighting you'd have to do with it to fit it well. I'd pick one up proactively at that price.

 

I wouldn’t worry having a snorkel and a scoop...that’s what I am about to do

I opened up my OE scoop years ago and I like how it lets heat out of the engine compartment. On hot days you can see heat waves rolling out of the scoop.

 

The amerihood one is pretty light and functional scoop straight to the factory airbox location

 

yeah those have been around for a while but they are only for gen 2.5 they don’t work on pre 2012’s

Went to the shop and pulled my bedsides yesterday to start some work on them. The plan for the camper shell has changed a bit. After thinking about it for a couple of months and bouncing ideas around we came up with an idea that we feel will be a better set up. I am going to laminate a 3/4" piece of wood onto the underside of the bedside top cap and then a heavy gauge metal L bracket will be made that runs the full length of the outside of the bed shell which will provide a solid platform under the bedside. Then the camper shell will simply sit on top of the bedside ( with new weather seals ) as it did originally. This will create a solid mounting surface and maintain a flexible connection as the shell should have to allow for chassis flex. It will look something like this :



First step is to smooth and level the under side of the bed side, I am using dyna glass for this step. If you are not familiar with the product it is a poly filler with short strand fiberglass already mixed into it. After the dyna glass is smoothed out I will make a template for my final cuts of wood.





Here is the template in the works, so this new thickened surface will be what sits on the long L metal bracket. Once the template is dialed in I will cut one board for each bedside and the wood will first be laminated in woven cloth and resin. When that dries it will be scuffed on all sides and bonded to the dyna glass with resin and then the whole sandwich will be covered with chopped mat and resin. I've got a few other mods that I will be doing to the bedsides and when they are complete I will be spraying the inside of the bedsides with Raptor liner before final assembly. With the cold temps this week this could be a one step per day project.

 

What's the tally on the weight have you tacked onto the truck?? The swing-out looks heavy AF. Gonna need an LS swap to break 55mph. LOL Don't race anything quicker than Volkswagen vans...

We've hit just about everything from the border down to the east cape around the corner up to the ferry at La Paz and down to Zihuatanejo. Before I met my girl she had already done Canada to Costa Rica in her VW bus...way more hardcore than a built Taco

 

damn, those are legit trips, furthest i have been is Scorps, would love to go all the way down then back up the cape. Don't have that kind of vaca time tho

A Mini down ( I assume ) the north road into San Juanico !? Wow you must have got lucky with the road conditions and not had any detours through the silt.

 

yea, north road, we were super lucky, no issues on the way down, even had to so through some silt on that road near Insurgentes. hit a pothole near Catavina on the way home. this is my "replacement" tire that we drove all the way home on, about 350 miles i think

 

A bit better view of the new dual swing out, really stoked on how the ideas for this rear bumper are working out. One of my goals was to get everything out of my bed since the bed is so small. I actually ditched my Pro Eagle jack and will just use it at home because they were able to fit a 1.5 ton HF jack on the left swing out under my jerry cans. The aluminum jack skid hooks into the mount on the front and clips into T handle pull pin latch at the back and is also lockable. The jack handle will stay inside the shell.

Side note - grinding off Linex suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuux ...don't ever use that shit on any serviceable or damageable part...or anything that you may want to change in the future
