I did the ceiling hoist option for awhile, but finally gave up on that as well. I found myself not wanting to go camping. By the time I got home Friday evening from work I just didn't want to spend the 2 hours it would take to load the truck with camping gear and get the tent on the bed bars. I decided the best option for me would be to buy a trailer for the tent. The idea being that I can keep all of my camping gear and tent loaded at all times so when I want to go camping my fiance and I just have to load our clothes and toiletries, drive to pick up the trailer from a storage unit, hitch it up, and go.

I use one of those to lift it off the truck and then up to the rafters in the garage, then a couple ratchet straps to secure it with for storage.
Easy one person push button operation with zero lifting

I am fully convinced that roof top tents are a pita.

storage- always and issue, can’t leave it on the truck because I can’t use it for work with a tent in the back.

the biggest issue is when I am camping I don’t think I have ever found a level camping spot.

next up it day tripping during a camping trip. Let’s say we set up base camp and then want to get for a mountain bike ride using two cars as a shuttle, now I have to pack up the tent to use the truck.

Pretty much all of these issues is what pushed me into a rooftop tent trailer. The key bonus to a RTT is when you have a significant other that does not want to camp on the ground. My fiance hated the idea of camping until I got a rooftop tent and now she loves it.

Folding platform - when it's horizontal, it's the same height as my bed bars. Just back up and slide the tent on or off. Once I'm out of the way I toss a strap over it and fold it away against the wall.

I used to just carry it on/off myself. But I have seen people use 2x4s to slide off onto harbor freight moving dollies

Depends, are you using the more than adequate ATV winch or a totally unnecessary 8000lb+ winch?

    1. It doesn't need to be level. Just as long as your head is above your feet, and you don't have an absurd side angle, you'll be more than fine.

    2. Don't unfold your tent until you know you know you're settled into camp for the night. Makes last minute things like twilight party laps a non-issue. Yes, you'll have to fold it up in the AM, but that seriously takes less than 5 mins.

Mine didn't drop at all when I added the tent. Granted, its behind the roof rack so there's negligible drag over how it was roof rack only. Adding the prinsu dropped maybe .5 mpg. Those E rated tires though...

Store mine on it's side on some moving dollies from HF, makes it easy to move if its in the way. have to have some friends over to load it up though.

As with all things, it's whatever fits your lifestyle best. Based on your description, certainly sounds like it's a huge pain.

That being said, I've done day tripping with the RTT. takes about 10 mins to take it down since all the bedding stays in there. just take down the windows, overhang, have the gf close it slowly while i tuck in the material, fasten velcro straps, then throw the cover over and zip it up.

this is great. I might be able to do something similar to this and actually be able to take off my tent solo now...time to hit the drawing board.

My tent being 115ish lbs is pretty easy to remove off the bed rack by myself. I just stand in the bed and stand it up on the tailgate, jump down and take if down from there. All slow and carefully not to scratch/damage anything on either truck or tent.
