My work truck is a 2018 f150 and it is most certainly not "whisper quiet". When you park on a jobsite you usually leave the keys in the ignition so someone can move it if they need to. The godawful keys in ignition chime will chirp to infinity while I get all the gear I need for whatever I'm laying out on the site until I angerly snatch the keys out and throw them in the cupholder. The tone of the chime is about 400 times more annoying than the Tacoma beep. One of these days f150, one of these days.

Bad news, it's been a standard feature on Toyota's (and probably all makes) for many, many years. My '93 Toyota T100 has a chime (actually it's a buzzer) when the door is open and the key is in the ignition. I'm sure it's a federal mandate or something. You'd probably have an easier time getting a dealer to disable your airbags then you would get them to disable that chime. Tune it out like the rest of the population does.

FWIW If you think the engine in a Tacoma is noisy, please never buy a Diesel anything...

My work truck is an '17 F-550 and I also hate the Ford Ding-dong, up/down chime. However there is a way to disable the chime on the F-series (at least for the F-450 and above, though there is a lot of commonality interior-wise between all the F-series trucks) for the seatbelt. It's buried in the manual or you should be able to Google it. It's pretty simple, something like inserting and removing the seatbelt x number of times in a given period of time. It's generally the first thing I do when I get a new work truck every four years or so. As far as I know Toyota does not offer such a feature.

Annoying - perhaps. But bitch at your politicians not Toyota. They mandate it for our own good! Don't you feel safer now that they're looking out for your welfare.

    In response to Clearwater Bill...

No, this is not my first smart key vehicle
    Let’s see..
Audi A4 - no stupid annoying chime when the engine was on and door open
Acura RDX - no stupid annoying chime when the engine was on and door open
Range Rover sports - no stupid annoying chime when engine was on and door open
Mini Cooper S countryman All4 - no stupid annoying chime when engine was on and door open

If other manufactures are able to produce vehicles without annoying door chimes that quiet honest have no useful purpose then why can’t Toyota????????

As for the comments about if this is the only thing that annoys you then you have things good. I didn’t spend $45,000+ to be annoyed every time I get and out of a vehicle which not only annoys me but also my customers.

I know you are annoyed and want to vent, but FWIW, my stepson has a new Mini Cooper S and my brother has a 2019 Audi Q7, both have the same annoying dingers as the new Toyota’s. Neither have been annoyed enough to try to find a way to stop it. Frankly, it really isn’t an issue with me either, my wife’s Lexus is the same as well, so I just expected it on the Tacoma. I believe it’s a federal safety requirement. If you normally incessantly whine about such minor things, I can’t imagine what you are like when something substantial happens. Jesus, if it bothers you so much, just get rid of your new truck and buy an older one without the nanny lights and dingers and move on.

My post was not about complain but asking for help to get the thing turned off along with pointing out how pointless the alarm/reminder is.

If you can't help and in your case can't provide truthful facts then don't reply. I know for a fact that Mini's and Audi's do NOT have the same system or anything anywhere as annoying. Lexus on the other hand.... well, they are Toyota anyway so what could you expect?

As an update, Toyota documents in the latest 2021 manual that you are able to have the door alarm/reminder turned off by dealer service departments - having mine done this week!

My 2019 didn’t always chime at me when my door was open but now my 2021 does constantly. I only find it obnoxious when it’s a quiet early morning or late and I go to get out of my vehicle and it’s chiming at me the door is open. Until I get out and shut the door it remains on. I don’t see too many answers with a fix so maybe there isnt one but if you found one lemme know!

There seems to be two ways to kill it:

-- Cut out the speaker that is mounted to the instrument panel. I did this and am thrilled with it. The side effect of not hearing the turn signals at long stoplights is an added bene.

-- You can disconnect the door sill switch. But doing so, you will lose the interior light switch function. I have not tried this myself. Kinda funny because I have them set to off anyway.

Yes, take the instrument cluster out, take about 10 screws out of the back of the cluster to get inside of it. There will be a black round speaker with 2 wires soldered to it, just twist it back and forth a couple of times and it will break off. Never hear anything beep again!

Have you tried shutting off the engine? Or closing the door?

A lot of this "nanny" stuff is driven by liability law suits, lawyers and the Govt passing requirements adding to the FMVSS.

Once upon a time, you didn't have to stomp on the brake to shift the vehicle out of Park. Due to a lawsuit and FMVSS, it is now a requirement.

Just wait, the "nanny" sh1t will hit the fan when the "self-drive" cars arrive. There are already vehicles that don't require your hands on the steering wheel.......:annoyed:

With my 2009 Taco I disconnected the wire leading to a hex bolt (about 3/8") rubber sensor on the driver side. There is one on the passenger side too; but that one does not seem to do anything that I can tell so far. Seems that the stock single wire/plug is grounded to the frame when the rubber sensor is closed by the driver door.

I think it may mess with the built-in alarm, and the dome light too -- I think I have to keep the dome light turned off (other interior lights work normal); but I can tailgate with the rocking 2009 TRD Sound System without having to hear that damn buzzer being heard during the lows! Well worth it in my opinion. That use to drive me nuts!

Took me all of about 10 minutes, and since I didn't cut anything I can always reconnect the wire/plug to the sensor that I just screwed back as unconnected with the stock wire tucked to the side.

    Good luck!

With your driver door open there is a black rubber piece. Easily reachable from seated position. Press it and the dinging stops so you can leave your door ajar!

Have you ever heard the door chime of a Ford? That would surely turn you into the next mass shooter...
