Hi everyone. I damaged the tailgate on my 2020 Tacoma. I was planning on purchasing a replacement, have it painted, and then transfer all of the components from my old one.

My question is, does anyone have any experience with transfering theses parts? I'm assuming it's relatively straightforward. Just wondering if there are any "gotcha's" before I start this project.

    Thanks!

Thanks, I'll look and see what's out there. One unique thing about the 2020 is the backup camera wiring harness. It's different than previous models, from what I understand - should be easy to swap though, if needed.

How did you damage it? If say something fell into it, like a ladder, it would be covered on your comprehensive insurance. I just went through this and the $1650 repair job cost me my $200 deductible.

What color is your truck and where do you live? There's a company near me that uses Tacomas as fleet vehicles and installs contractor canopies that replace the tailgate. Most of their trucks are MGM, but they have a few oddball colors. It your truck is white, you're golden.

And likely stolen. I’ve seen several ads there and elsewhere selling tailgates. They state they either have the color you need or can get it. One had an image of five ot six different colored tailgates.

I don't really care if one is stolen. I didn't steal it. Buying one is only going to get the thief the urge to get another one. They're going to get caught eventually. It's not your job to play detective. If you see one, go ahead and buy it. You're doing nothing wrong.

You are buying stolen property. Would it be a crime you’d be arrested for? Probably not. Is it morally and ethically right? If you would buy one that is likely stolen, you likely don’t know the correct answer.

All of us disparaging the act won’t change your course of action. That must come from inside.

It's all "who cares" until it's your tailgate that gets stolen. If people stopped buying obviously stolen merchandise, the market would eventually dry up or would at least greatly reduce. Waiting for the criminal to get caught is laughable.

Kind of like the shit bag recycling centers that accept obviously stolen cats or copper wire. THEY are the problem. Criminals are just opportunists.

Frankly, it’s the way many kids are raised today. Morally bankrupt.

What if the seller makes something for work trucks or stake bodies and just happens to come across some? It's not your job to assume. It's kinda dangerous actually.

Yea, I could be wrong. But honestly, what are the odds? Reaching to justify buying what you know is mostly stolen is still ethically questionable.
