Data point for "appliances" that can power from the built in inverter

A BOSE WAVE will not turn on in the 100Watt mode, but works well with the 400 watt output.

Tailgating with the engine running is not my thing. ;-)

 

In my experiences with that bed plug it’s useless. I had it on my 09 and could never use it, it’s on my 19 and Iv tried a few things while camping and no dice. Maybe guys can run a small fridge on it while driving to location? Idk but I haven’t found one good use for it on the multiple trips I have been on.

 

Unless they have changed it, the 400 watt mode works even with the engine off.

 

Looks like the BOSE WAVE is rated @ 120w?

 

My plan is to mount a 1500 watt inverter "somewhere", and run SO chord back to the outlet. Maybe add an cab mounted outlet from the OEM inverter.

Location is yet to be determined. Short large gauge wires from the battery to the inverter, then 14 ga. From the inverter to the outlet. As the inverter has multiple outlets built in, it's literally an extension chord to the bed outlet location.

 

I can run my mini air mattress inflator pump, no issues.
My small coffee maker will work for a few minutes, then it requires a reset at the dash switch. 4-5 resets and I'll have a pot of coffee.
Both require the engine to be running.
Other than those 2 experiences, my expectation is that there's very few 110 VAC appliances that can run off that outlet.

 

I wonder if it will power a 100Watt light bulb continuously? '=)

 

With the engine running I can power my 110VAC air compressor and fill my tires.

 

Works great for charging 20v Dewalt batteries

It's been enough of an air compressor to have filled tires on 2 4WD K1500 Suburbans, a 911, a 380SL, Honda Pilot, Mustang and a Model A for 20+ years and now a Taco.
Guess they made them better back then.

 

I was thinking more in terms of its current draw. It's certainly not a 150 PSI, 8.5 CFM compressor - more like one that plugs into a cigarette lighter 'cept it's 110 VAC.

 

Nope, it's a true portable compressor. Only good to 120PSI, tho'.

I was pleasantly surprised when I plugged it in to try it and it worked.

 

Ive uses it to charge phones and batteries at the beach, and run lights but not much else.

 

That inverter begs the question, But why? Worthless at tits on a boar hog: I can make coffee with my Jetboil. I can light the night with my Zebralight headlight. Can power my CPAP machine all night using a jump starter unit that uses an 11Ah battery. I can inflate my tires with my 12V air compressor. I can charge all these batteries with my Honda EU2000i portable generator, and run a 6000Btu air conditioner to keep me cool in the summer heat. Using almost no gasoline. And while doing it still have the excess watts to run every appliance that will be discussed here. And I can use it at home when the power goes off. Get you a Honda and be done with it. They are both inverters. One runs on six cylinders and puts out 400 watts. The other runs on one tiny cylinder and puts out 2000 watts. You don't have to be Einstein...

100 watts. That's less than 1 amp. What appliance or tool do we need to run while in the great outdoors that uses less than 1 amp? Start my truck to power something of any consequence? NO. Get a Honda.

 

Although the outlet has some uses (never used it once in 4 years) Toyota should wise up and provide a 12V lighter socket in the bed, stock.

90% of all things people use camping can be run or charged off a standard 12V outlet, with or without a USB adapter stuck in it.

Literally nothing I own wants a 120Vac outlet to power it or charge. My air compressor wants a 12V outlet, my mattress inflator wants the same. My cordless drill battery charger has a 12V charger as well. Everything else charges off USB, which is easy with 12V and a socket adapter.

The inverter is literally useless to me. I keep hoping I’ll find a use for it someday.

 

I'd like to say I use it to charge my Kobalt batteries when I'm running around but in reality I plug it in, jump in the truck, and then immediately forget to push the fucking button.

 

The Klipsch 2.1 speakers will bring down the house at 200 watts. The older wired version in much better compared to the newer wireless.

Is there a "how to" for running a good 12V set to the back outlet panel? I thought I saw reference. but don't seem to find it now.

As mentioned, I plan a High Amp 12V wiring to "somewhere" (thinking of between the back seat on the AC) to power a "real" inverter with lines back to the bed outlet. Running some 12V extensions back for an "Add a PLUG" would make sense. The truck is new, Winter is just getting over with. I need to crawl under there for a look see.
