I've never been out that way. If I can get my tire rubbing issue sorted I'd probably be game.

Well...guess I'm getting serious now. Ordered a little over $4k in skid plates, front and rear bumpers, and rock sliders for the new Tacoma last week. Will be at least June before they are delivered and I can install them because of lead-times. In the meantime, looking for advice on suspension considerations. Done lots of online research and it seems like the Bilstein 5100 upgrade with an AAL in the rear should be sufficient, but looking for any advice from you guys. Not interested in major rock crawling and the truck is my daily driver, but want to have sufficient capacity to travel in the back-country without limiting myself too much. Not running a RTT or rack, but will have a soft-toper over my existing Decked system. Also not looking to do any of the other major cutting/mods to accommodate larger tires than the 265/75r16 (at least not for now). I currently have the stock suspension of the TRD Offroad package. Any advice on the Bilstein 5100 upgrade or other recommendations?

I never suggest running anything less than a full coilover.... but tons of people run 5100’s as it’s a cheap way to get lift. With as much as you’re spending on armor, don’t cheap on suspension.

If it were me.... Fox 2.5” coilovers up front with 600lb springs.
New leaf pack in the rear suited for the weight, maybe an OME heavy duty pack. Dakar’s or something (it’s been a while since I looked into leaf springs) with a 2.0 smooth body fox.

    $3-4k for everything.

With front and rear bumpers, plus skids and sliders, and likely a winch up front, he"ll need 650 minumum or likely 700 springs up front.

I bought my truck with an already installed Icon 2.5 and UCA kit. I've had no problems with it whatsoever, but I know lots of folks like to talk shit about Icon and their products on the regular 3rd gen forum. As I said I've had no problems, but I'm not super knowledgeable about it all so someone can probably offer better advice.

I will say that eventually I'm going to switch out the lift kit and go a bit higher. I mainly street drive my truck to and from work and its paid off so I figure I'll just do whatever to it, then when I want a vehicle payment I'll pickup something else and continue to play around with the Tacoma.

Wrong. I’m running 600’s on the runner with a winch, 140lb plate bumper, skids from front bumper to rear axle, sliders, and the biggest battery I could stuff in the stock location.

I know plenty of people running 550’s or 600’s on fully armored Tacoma’s and 4runners. No one in a tacoma needs 650’s or 700’s.

Thats wild. Im on 650s in my second gen and almost feel a little undersprung.

Arent the 3rd gen stock springs 600s already as well?

Edit: looks like Accutune says 600 minimum for best comfort, but may need 650 or 700 on tacomas as required.

You probably just need bigger springs. I’m running 14” 600’s. Everyone goes to heavy springs because “more weight” and it ends up riding like a dump truck. Shock tuning and really light springs will give you the best and most stable ride.

Little slower valving might help. It rides great on 650s, just gets a little nose divey if I jam on the brakes. 600 was def too soft.

Correct with the valving. Longer 600’s would’ve probably helped. But I also don’t know what shocks you have

If you want to go, then we could push it to the following weekend?

Either get the rubbing problem solved, or don’t let it stop you.

I was thinking we could leave Friday sometime afternoon, then come home on Sunday.

it’s up to you. I was thinking we would leave May 14th and come home on the 16th.

I would like to do Devils Racetrack and one or two more.

I agree with @Kerleyfries. You’re invested now. Get a decent setup. Talk to someone like @AccuTune Offroad, they could hook you up with a proper setup. They were having a special on a Fox setup this week or last.

I would go with Deavers for your leaf pack. I have a set of Expi II’s, if your interested. You would need to get the hardware. I put about 20 to 25k miles on them.

And if you really want to get rowdy, get a set of Hammer Hangers with the crossbar. If you went with the crossbar, then you would need to relocate your spare tire. AND you could do their rear shock relocate. That would be a sweet setup.

Dang I don't think I will have the GX ready for a multi day trip. Once I get the brakes fixed and the new tires on I think may run black dragon in the swell as a quick shakedown run though. Ill reach out here to see if anyone wants to tag along.

Just the one when I bought it. No changes yet. It's getting some new wheels and tires here next week and then I can start using it more and getting it out in the dirt.
