    Front situation.

    Option A is a spacer

Option B is new shocks/struts (have no idea why they call them struts, they are nothing more than coil overs).

I keep seeing all these shocks like 5100s that are adjustable but can't tell if they adjust preload to get the height or if they legitimately simply adjust the height. Haven't been able to find a clear answer, couple posts made it sound as if preload is increased that I found.

    Thanks

5100's can be used 2 ways.
1 with stock springs and the perch clip is set to between 1 and 5 i think. This compresses the stock spring. The higher you set the clip, the rougher the ride.

2 can be paired its old man emu spring, eibach or Toytec with a stiffer spring and the 5100's set on the bottom (0) clip and achieve the lift and get a better ride.

The more weight you have in front... bumper, winch etc... then a higher spring rate you want.

Actually no the only reason I'm considering lifting a bit, function. Aesthetics doesn't matter to me at this point. Would have about the same rake when I'm done. Was looking at 1" front and rear using AAL in the rear.

Rear is my issue because stock leafs suck, they have settled to barely 1/2 higher than front. With having ride rites in the back on cradles, if the bags get low on pressure there is very little room for the axle to move before cradle is bottoming the bags out. Something I didn't see coming with all the reading I did here prior to installing the air bags.

Now what is the big deal of using say 1/2" spacer in the front? That's the down side versus changing shocks. Not going to go nuts with a 2 or 3" lift, as I said, 1" is as far as I'm going if I decide to do it.

A spacer does nothing for function. If you want increased function, you gotta do the suspension. Do a LOT of research first though.

i don't get why everyone on here seems to "hate" spacers, mechanically they do the same ting as the 5100's the move the lower control arm a little further down, yes i under stand if your putting 3 inch spacers and are doing heavy off-roading there is a possibility of bottoming out your spring (witch you will do with stock springs on 5100's as well) but 1-1.5 inches of lift there is zero chance that you will put any added stress on the suspension than the 5100's will, and there about 1/5th of the cost. i did months of research on this spoke with many Tacoma owners that have done many types of lifts and a few actual mechanics that have fixed at home lift caused suspension problems, and the consensus is under 2.5 inch lift there is no benefit to more expensive setup. also a side note one of my buddy's has a stack of 5100's in his shop with the lower mount point bent.
just my 2 cents, i did a .75 inch spacer on my 2018 which gave it a 1.5 inch lift and an add a leaf in the rear that added about 1 inch, now in basically level and have done some legit dumb shit off-roading and its all still fine.

Spacers alone seriously mess with the suspension and more importantly steering geometry. Ride quality will suffer. Suspension flex will suffer. And not only does steering control suffer but it puts stress on the front end components is areas not originally designed for it.

Installing a complete and hopefully well engineered suspension system will help minimize these concerns but not eliminate them.

Dude someone needs to catch up with the times. When brands release versions that are already lifted, factory lift options fully supported by the same long term warranties, GUESS WHAT, they are designed for it.

It's EXCEEDING the design that can cause issues.

I had a simple question that NO ONE HERE could comprehend. Bunch of desk jockeys. Very simple. My life has been under the hood, forgotten more than most here will ever learn. I know how lifts work, what happens from no lift to stupid high lift. How it's done right, how it's done to do a job within limits and what's just freaking retarded.

What is so damn hard to answer a question? I got the question answered in 10 seconds without issue or this crap. Was happy to answer and then explain why he was set up how he is. DONE. SIMPLE. Not desk jockey bs

Wait, you started the thread with "Noob question on lift"

Then say "I've been under the hood my entire life, worked in the industry my entire adult life. Your barking up the wrong tree with that mess. I know what comes with a lift, what happens from top to bottom. I tried to keep it simple and direct to avoid desk jockies. Obviously trying to be clear on where I'm at and detailed the situation was too smart for some to handle."

    So which is it?

Based on your title and initial question you're going to get a lot of answers. If you don't like the answers then ask the question differently from the start.....

Answers that are helpful yes. LIKE THE FIRST 1.

Noob to lifting independent front suspension.

People trying to "internet expert" batter people into seeing things their way and never saying anything actually relevant. Basically post quoted above. Useless, uneducated internet expert desk jockey response of 0 usefulness other than "it's not right if you don't spend $20k on your suspension set up" which is plain retarded.

I have little issue with other responses other than except the first one, they didn't address questions, just pissing contest on spacer or not.

Why is it when folks don’t get the answers they want they get upset?
