If a guy elongated the mounting holes in the front bed rail, would that allow the rail to be adjusted lower?

Curious as to how you’re making out with the diamondback? I’m on the fence about one but there have been several threads about them leaking, not where the rail is but in the area where the door are hinged at the center section. Any problems with the difference in height there on the front rail?

I don’t know if that’s possible because of the ridges on the bed, I think that they would prevent the rail from dropping any lower. Look at your bed, I don’t think that would be physically possible to do.

Yeah...I dont know if the front of that rail actually sits on top of the composite bed...I'll have a look later.

What I’ve found with the DB is that you need to progressively tighten it down as the gasket settles and forms over the bed rail caps’ variations. Same applies to the front rail. So far there has only been a very small amount of water get it through the front and I’m pretty sure I’ve got that sorted for good now (got the wife to lie on the panels as I tightened them).

What I also did was install the factory rubber plugs, which requires taking the bed rail caps off. Since they were off, I ran a bead of silicon on the inside edge - no water has got in that way. You have to trim the bed rail cap a little to get it back on over the OEM rubber plugs and then fill the small gap on top with silicon. Some pictures below.

I’m pretty happy with my DB as it is well made and it’s the only cover on the market that fits our needs. Like most things, just a few tweaks required and the instructions do say that you need to adjust as the gaskets settle.

Exactly the information that I was lookin for. I was going to seal under the bed rail caps too. I have the factory cover so I want to replace them also. My thoughts were exactly as yours, slow even tightening of all three parts of the diamondback. I’ve seen pics where some have tightened down the center rail so hard that the rail caps started to deform. No need to go nuts on it like that but keep all the tightening equal between the access doors and the center piece.
I think that’s a great thing about that cover is the adjustment on the tightening until everything settles in. which version did you go with?

those appear to be for filling the gap between the front and side rails but I don't see how they could help with sealing with a height difference.

Glad that’s what you’re looking for! It was pretty easy to get the bed rail caps off too, with no damage. Get some plastic trim tools and take your time.

We went with the SE. I also got the FrontRunner system from DB so we can mount bikes on top. Given the payload of my Tacoma is only 945 lbs, there was no need to go for the HD as we’d never make use of the extra carrying capacity (and associated extra expense!). Also grabbed a CrossBin 8 which is awesome and leaves tons of room underneath for skis etc. I will say too that the DB customer service has been really good and responsive to questions. You leaning any particular direction for the cover model?

Nope. The square tube sits on top of the header board.

Most tonneaus designed for the 3rd gen have a thinner seal at the front to account for the difference. My Extang Encore is like that.

That’s correct but with the Diamondback’s, the gasket seal deforms so the height difference, in mine at least, is no longer an issue.

Leaning towards the SE smooth. What did you use under the caps, looks like silicone? There’s a couple threads here where the weatherstripping on the hinge side at the center appears to have been cut short, hopefully that’s no longer a problem. I’m about 90 minutes from the factory so if there’s a problem I’d assume I could have them look at it.
Now I just have to talk myself into swallowing the price! Damn they’re expensive.

@cop414, yup just black exterior window/door silicon. I let it fully cure before putting the cap rails back on. That gap issue between the centre panel and panels seems to be diminishing with mine as it gets tightened down - I’ll likely just have to add a couple of small weatherstripping patches but we’ll see if it’s necessary. And yeah, they ain’t cheap - and I’m in Canada so that added another 25%!

One other thing that I’ll add - the bare aluminum underneath the DB covers works really well with the OEM bed lights. The reflection means the whole bed is nicely illuminated!

    I forgot to circle back...

Elongating the bolt holes on the front rail in an attempt to drop it down to match the height of the bedside tops will not accomplish anything. The square rail itself is what sets the height from the top of the composite bed tub.

I uninstalled, sealed, and reinstalled along with the front tie down rail and now mine is more level. YMMV
