What we want may become irrelevant. Sometimes you just can’t have it anymore. There’s no winning this one since both sides would end up cramming their preferences down the others throats. I don’t like what’s coming in either case. I’ve enjoyed a life with planes, trains, and automobiles but it’s pretty obvious that we can’t continue as before. It sucks but pretending it won’t happen or that we don’t all have something to lose is what an Ostrich does. This threads going to be locked soon anyway, enjoy the beach.

Nope, not going to get one, even if it charges with solar. Off-roading and overlanding with the range of an EV will suck, no matter where you go!

Agreed. I just fear the worst. Like a fuel shortage. At least one CA city has banned any new gas stations from being built. So I've read.

True enough, for now. Can you imagine black market gasoline and deisel? As with cigarettes, they don’t forbid them but regulate hell out of how much you pay and where you can use them. Taxes and registration that favor ev’s are a certainty. It’s not that it will be impossible just progressively more expensive and inconvenient just as it’s been more expensive and inconvenient to own ev to begin with.

Living close to a rez, a southern state, or the border of Mexico will have more people driving to those to fill up, for awhile at least.

If there was a contest to place bets on who will be the last private person to own and operate an ice vehicle, and when, what would you say? Assuming it happened soon... i’m thinking some ultra-rich person that is deeply into the oil industry, maybe the last former prez. Whoever does it would be mainly fighting against the system and showing a last act of defiance. I have to wonder what it will be like when the changeover happens.

The conversion to using electric for everything will be our downfall. Our power consumption needs will never be met and by the year 3030 the planet will be in ruin and AI will be running everything and the only place you can drive your EV will be the Matrix.

I'm in my 30's. I plan to be the last ICE driver. Will formulate something for fuel. Tacoma LS1 swap, 6 speed manual. One day.

You'll convert your gas engine to electric. Simple.

With charging stations being located in larger parking lots anyway ev’s won’t be going to them so the need will decline. Unless charge time can be brought down to fill up time. For now it’s going to be park it and go do something else. The highway system had a huge impact on local businesses creating ghost towns across the country. It won’t be the same as that but neither will it be the same as now. Forward thinkers will put them at arcade/amusement parks, multi-screen/low capacity movie theaters, truck stops, places that already have large lots and a way to kill an hour. Investing in adjacent solar farms will be like investing in cell towers was.

Fuck, where’d I park my horse. These worst case scenarios are trivial. All the Mad Max movies took for granted fought over but still accessible fuel but the days of “bubblin’ crude” are long gone.

VR only. Like that scene from Ready Player One with everyone out in the streets fighting with vr foes you’ll be sitting at the wheel wearing your goggles like a kid on the 25 cent ride outside Walmart.

I am not opposed to EV’s at all, I just don’t think they’re practical all of the time. A Tesla for the wife’s 16 mile round trip commute would be fine.

That home above was 0.2 miles from the vacation home, and I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure a roof mounted solar panel wouldn’t be very effective without a roof.

As for road trips, what’s a necessary “rest”? I easily do that 762 mile drive with 3 planned stops for about 10 minutes each for gas, food, and restroom breaks all in one. I probably don’t stop 30 minutes the whole trip. I don’t really want to turn a drive mapped out at 11:17 to 14.

Again, EV’s have their place, but when I’m in a race against mold and permanent damage, I don’t want to wait for a EV to charge and then have no way to charge it when I get there. You can put gas in cans and drive them down from out of the area for both vehicle and generator use.

Yeah I dont get this "they are shoving it down our throats" argument.

When light bulbs came out, I guess there were also people who said candles and gas lamps are better. I guess some people also said "how will you send electricity to all the houses, all I need is a match for my candle". Nobody shoved lightbulbs down people throats, candles simply became too impractical to use. Same will happen to ICE. I am pretty sure in 30 years people will think how impractical it was to buy a liquid fuel for their car from a "designated shop", same way how we think how impractical it is to buy whale oil to light inside of you house with gas lamps.
