Has anyone used the aluminum oil filter from Amazon? I have broken 3 of the plastic housing by braking the 3 plastic notches!

I’m not sure how to add an Amazon link here...

There is a tool for the filter
If you break 3 times are you sure you have the right tools
Aluminum filter housing is great I like them

dang, 18 pound feet if I remember correctly, that's just about how tight the housing should be
if you had broken notches, you or someone must have over tightened the crap out of it
    FWIW
I had aluminum housing, bought it from the dealership. No problem for me, but still I torqued it to spec so even the plastic one shouldn't break under correct torque spec.

Definitely over torqued if you're breaking off the tabs lol.

I just did my first oil change yesterday and swapped to the aluminium one. Looks better in my opinion and matches with the rest of the engine.

Yes, you can go to parts department and say you want to buy oil filter housing for your Tacoma v6. Chances are they are plastic. I visited 2 different dealerships locally to finally find one that had just 1 aluminum housing left in stock.

Yep, I had an Avalon and only had dealership done all the maintenance until the warranty expired.
First time I tried to change oil, the housing was so tight I had to go out and buy a breaker bar just to loosen it.

You'd think that dealership would do it right, but I learned that and after that only change oil myself and not even gonna use the free oil changes Toyota offers.

It is very frustrating. I’m also not used to this type of oil filter set up. coming from a family of Ford lovers this is like working on a spaceship aha

Yes, be careful with aluminum on aluminum. Galling happens very easily with Al to Al contact.

Suggest to use a little lube on the threads and DO NOT over torque it.

On my wife's 4Runner the first time I did the oil change I had to use a 30" cheater bar to break it loose. I've ordered the metal housing and will be installing it on the next oil change but I would definitely like to have a word with whoever severely over-torqued it at the dealership.

    Hi
I broke my filter housing the day before a long trip. 2017 OR taco. Yes, same amazement and frustration about plastic housing. The three teeth on one side and two on other (something to that affect) do not distribute the applied torque evenly. All the torque went on one single tooth on plastic housing and cracked off on mine. Luckily I heard it and could view filter media thru hole before filling oil.
Use the below linked wrench which grabs the bottom of the housing on the 14 flats instead.
I ordered a aluminum housing instead also and will put it on next oil change. Luckily my dealer had the replacement plastic housing in stock. The parts dept said it is a common occurrence. Likely due to popular wrenches which grab the housing mid way up by the teeth like projections. Ill put the new plastic housing in rear storage incase Im on a trip and aluminum one damaged etc .
Cause yer up a creek if it breaks.
