I noticed that my 2017 TRD OR DCLB rolls backwards, makes some weird noise & traction light comes on when in drive stopped on an hill. Doesn’t seem right or is this normal, kind of nerve racking? Figured since I’m in drive the truck shouldn’t be rolling back. Please help, thanks in advance.

It’s traction control catching the truck. Sometimes these things do that because they’re so heavy.

Certain hills can overcome and engine. However, that light is the feature designed to prevent this kicking in

If the hill is steep enough gravity will take course

If the force of gravity pushing it downhill is greater than the idling engine is pushing fluid through the torque converter there you have it

In the old days the truck would just roll, today it seems abs stops it for you?

Hell on steep enough hills my 95 would stall in drive, same thing with my 01 4r

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
A manual transmission will fix that!

THey have a SPECIAL third pedal just to control roll back on hills. With proper use, There are no annoying lights or klaxons...

It's an option, when making an new vehicle purchase.

Doesn’t 3rd Gen trd’s have Hill assist by pressing the in brake?

I forget, I’ve been driving hills and mountains so long I use both feet, it’s nothing I use personally.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
    Handbrake

Pull it up but keep the button depressed with your thumb. As you start to move forward, slowly lower the brake.

    No slippage.

Works for sticks, too. You just have to modulate the gas, clutch and Handbrake at the same time.

Absolutely normal. Any AT can and will do this depending on the weight of the vehicle, angle of the hill, and idle speed & TQ design.

    Agree with what you said.

However, the 3 hills that my Taco does this, and the nasty grinding noise happens, my LX570, FJC, or my RCF doesn't do it at all. Having lived in the same house for 19 years, my 21 Taco is the first one who does it. My 18 Taco didn't do it either. (not scientific, just my everyday life experience)

Of course, per this thread, this has been happening for a while and is "typical" of this Taco https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/grinding-noise-when-starting-uphill.669953/

    Why not?

Been doing that on hills in cars with manual transmission since the 80s. Never had a problem with it.

If I had an automatic that was rolling back before moving forward, I'd take it into the dealership and ask them to look at it.

You really shouldn’t be holding your truck stopped on a hill with the clutch pedal..

..your trucks have brake pedals, right?

Ignorance is bliss. Reading is fundamental.

They would tell you to read the manual, as it is "typical" of Tacoma as has been stated many times already, and is stated in the manual as well.
