reverse lights...need advice

I saw some threads before about how some people installed fog/driving lights as reverse lights. i am thinking of doing the same but was wondering how everyone mounted them? the only please i could find was under the bumper. below are some pics of it mocked up. but i havent commited to fully installing it yet. but i think it might be too low. i don't offroad so not afraid of rocks hitting it but just the aesthetics of it.

 

Have you had the chance to check out the light pattern they cast?? Cause if they are super bright you could put them under the body and let the light shine out from underneath...

They look like they should be pretty safe there for day to day and I'm not sure how much more stealthy you can make them without losing some of the light.

Youre right, i don't want to loose any of the beam by trying to much to hide them up more.
the beam is about medium. its only 55w. the beam extends about a good 10-15 feet out from the way i plan to have them angled.
I think i may leave them where they are mocked. i just will take another look before i commit. i do kinda like the way they hang down. im afraid it may look tacky. but i like the chrome housing as oppose to the ones i've seen with black plastic and blue lenses.

 

go with the KC small rectanglular lights they are cheap and work great

where can i get KC? is that the brand name? i got mine at walmart.

 

After I read your thread, I went outside and looked at the rear of my truck. In the past I had considered putting additional lights at the rear. This is what I would do. first try to find an LED replacement for the reverse lights. That in itself might make it brighter. Second, I would try to mount a rectangular light across the little step in the middle of the rear bumper. Not sure if it would be on top or underneath. Literally next to the hitch. Try turing on your light at night and determine if 1 or 2 is what you need. Don't make more holes than needed. Thats still a tough one. The lights where you've got them now Im sure look a little odd to you. They do to me. Good luck. Either way, take a pic and show the completed project!

 

I am very interested in seeing a set up that won't get torn off or snagged.
I like the idea of lights hidden inside for down light.
I really could of used and extra set a week ago, may even do some eye-balling myself to see what I can come up with.
Has anyone ever thought of just one light, sort of like they do oversea's for the fog light in back.....but still a location of protection.

 

If you really wanted to do it - drill holes in the bumper that are perfect size for the lights... and them mount inside the bumper.

 

I am trying to install a set of the White Night reverse lights that install on the hitch. I don't have a wiring tester. I need to know what wire i need to splice into to get the lights to activate when the truck is in reverse. I have the power and ground hooked up but don't want to start splicing every wire till i get it right. The instructions in the box and web site suck royally...

 

I think it looks fine, and if you're not the off-road type, you shouldn't have any worries with them hanging there like that. Have you considered a more rectangular, narrower light? Would be less obvious and hang down less.

Where'd you get that hitch-step?

Hah! Thanks, but I was asking about the hitch-step in the pictures that the OP put up.

 

Thats the same set up that I use and it works great. I don't even worry about it off roading as it is level with the bottom of my hitch receiver pretty much, and if anything happens it's $15

a couple hints would be to pop off the outer ring and seal it with epoxy of something similar as they like to pop off eventually on bumpy roads, also I wired mine in with an add a fuse and it supplys all the power nessicary.

 

got it at pepboys for $22. its cast aluminum. pretty solid and useful.

 

i really did like the set up i had which is exactly like yours but took them off and returned them when i found out the top can pop off of those. so i'm gonna get some of the black plastic casing ones instead but its hard to find those with clear and not blue lenses.
