that's even better because they drive that much in less than a year, amsoil heavy duty filter is rated for 1 year or 25k which ever first.

i'm use amsoil oil and filter, but I change it at 5k because I drive about 600 miles a month, it'll be too long for the filter

The manual says 10k for the oil changes, but then why is there a 5k maintenance light? Find it weird for that to just be tire rotations :der:

I ignore the 5k services. 10K works for me and all the vehicles I have owned running high quality synthetics. The only vehicle I had that I did a 1000 mile service was my M4 because it apparently comes with a special break in oil. I’m not even sure I believe that. I had a 2005 Corolla with 299,999 miles (the odometer stops working after that) that I did 10k oil change intervals with Mobil And the car never had any issues except for a broken clock.

To the OP's question, I bought my '20 Taco brand-new last April, I changed the oil and filter at 5K miles myself in December. The oil looked okay (my truck had seen a fair amount of hauling and four-wheeling during that time) and the filter was fine. For the first oil and filter change I like the idea of changing it at 5K miles. My next oil change will be at 15K or 12 months. Today's synthetic oils are a lot better than they were even 15 years ago. FWIW I'm using Mobil-1 Synthetic and OEM oil filters.

I'm not a personally a fan of Amsoil for reasons which I get to below but I wanted to offer that my work truck is a Ford F-550 with the Diesel engine (6.7L Powerstroke). It's on a lease and due to problems the company I work for has had in the past with later-model Diesel (Ford and Ram) engines we're required to do oil changes every 200 engine hours, which for me is roughly every six weeks or ~3,000 miles. The shop I go to uses generic Synthetic oil and Motorcraft oil filters. I know it's anecdotal but thus far, those of us who are sticking to the 200 engine hour interval seem to be having fewer mechanical problems then are the guys who are stretching it or waiting until the 'Oil change Required' message comes-on. FWIW These are trucks which idle more than 50% of the time, are heavy (16K-20K LBS) and rarely get washed (so the last one is more a pet-peeve against my co-workers who are too lazy to wash a $120K truck every couple of weeks). My take-away is that for engines which lead hard lives, more frequent oil changes are probably better, however I doubt many Taco's lead such hard lives.

Five years ago I did run Amsoil oil and filters in an old, high-mileage 4x4 I used to own which burned oil and in a fairly new (at the time) Corolla. Amsoil was billed to me by the sales rep as being able to significantly-reduce the oil consumption in my 4x4 and increase the gas mileage in my Corolla, so I decided to give it a try. I even bought some special engine-prep stuff which was supposed to clean-out the sludge which was causing the high-oil consumption in my 4x4. In the end, the gas mileage in my Corolla stayed basically the same and my 4x4 actually started using oil at a higher rate, so I went-back to running Mobil 1 in the Corolla and the cheapest dino-oil I could find in the 4x4. Both were still running fine when I sold them quite some time later.

    YMMV

I change at 5k if my driving condition is any thing short of the ideal highway conditions stated in the owners manual. I've seen alot of engines go bad from doing extended OCIs while driving short trips or other-than-ideal conditions. IMO an extra money spent($400 over 100,000 miles) is worth it. Would you want your engine sludging up or burning your oil over $400?

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Yep. I got dang near $40k in the new one...I ain't gonna boo hoo over oil changes. 5K for me.

Funny that when Toyota recommends extended service intervals it's fine, but when they say something is 'normal' watch out! :p

Please don't tell people to look at their oil. It means nothing nowadays, literally nothing.

It may not be scientific (although if I were wearing a lab coat while I did it would that change things?) But I've found that clean oil looks (and feels between my fingers) vastly different than does dirty oil. Especially in vehicles which go off-road. Case-in-point a couple of months ago I noticed that the oil on one of my ATV's looked very dirty after one 80 mile ride. Further investigation showed that the foam air filter on that engine was failing.

I did my first @ 4k miles, and every 6 months or 7k miles after that.

woah!! kinda taking a chance there with a blown engine, you need to be changing it every 99 miles man. :D

OP - 10k is fine, it's 2021. Ultimately it's up to you tho, but there's no need for 5k oil changes.
