Sherpa Grand Teton roof rack owners

So I am sold on getting Sherpa racks but I still want to be able to hold my snowboard and kayaks on the rack but not sure how they would mount.

How would you mount these products;

These are the main roof rack accessories that I currently use but would love to get the sherpa tendon and crow's nest roof racks but want to make sure that these accessories can be used on them before I get rid of the thule square bar racks that I currently have.

What accessory mount is needed to be able to hold those yakima accessories and how would they mount?

Im not an expert and only recently got a crows nest but it looks like all those accessories come with mounting hardware that is for a round or square bar. The cross bars that come with the Sherpa racks are going to be to wide for those to clap to. They do have the adapt plate which would probably be the best way to get those mounted up there. I know one of the owners is on here and might be able to provide more insight.

 

The cross rails are basic 80/20 extrusions and accept tapped threaded inserts (Sherpa sells them and has the best price/material). I’m not sure what kind of articulating joints your kayak rollers have, but I would assume you just remove the adapter clamp and bolt it directly to the threaded insert with your own size appropriate washers/fender washers and specific length 1/4-20 bolt. You should be able to bolt just about any bike, ski or board rack very easily.

 

This is what we normally have done with ski racks, cargo boxes etc. Some clamps work with the 80/20 great and others you just have to find a way around it by hard mounting or changing to a different style clamp that works with the 1x2" bars.

 

Is it possible to add go fast camper Superlite on Sherpa rack?

 

It can handle the weight no problem, but packaging is the issue since hard shell campers are long

It depends on what you are wanting from it. Sherpa is working on making a bed rack that matches up well to their roof rack, and I know their prototype has had a hard shell RTT on it the whole time. If you are planning on leaving the tent on your truck all the time, I would go this route

I've been shopping for roof racks for a minute and came upon this thread. I'm sold on the Grand Teton. Still trying to figure out exactly how I want to organize things on the roof rack (pelican case, hilift jack, awning, etc.) but thank you all for your contributions to this thread. Helped me big time

 

What did everyone use to keep the weather strip on? 3M or adhesive?

I used a few small dollops of clear silicone sealant. Worked great.

 

Do you have lights on the back of the roof rack to provide more light on the bed?

 

no, I have ther OEM bed lights, they are very bright as it is. I do have those baja designs rock lights with the sherpa mounts, but I am making some custom brackets so I can fit a kc cyclone v2 in place of the BD rock light since they are super brighter and offer more options

 

I’ve read a wide range of opinions on wind noise and mpg loss with various roof racks. Thought I’d ask opinions on this thread, as I’m seriously thinking about buying a Grand Teton. I have stock wheels and no lift so it’s a fairly quiet ride. Most of the time I’d be running the rack bare. I’d mostly use it for a canoe or kayaks on my 6-8 camping trips each summer.

Don’t beat me up on MPGs. I know it’s a truck and I didn’t buy it for good gas mileage, but it is my daily driver.

My 2.7l 4x4 lost a good deal of fuel economy with the rack, not sure about how it affects the v6 mileage. The fairing cuts noise down a lot but the wind noise is obvious with the half fairing and 40” light bar. My tires make more noise than the rack and the exhaust is even louder yet. You won’t notice it after a few weeks.

 

I don’t care what anyone else says, whether it’s your dd or off-road range and how much fuel you need to carry, it matters. Just having a pair of thule square bars costs me 1mpg. If there’s anything on them such as lumber or a ladder it’s worse, that’s with several years experience having them on and off the roof. It’s my dd as well as my work truck so when not in use the bars get stowed on a rack in the shell. It’s not about looks for me so it’s dumb for me to have something up there costing me when it’s not earning it’s keep. For someone that uses them constantly a more permanent installation would be better. The tracks are permanent on both the cab and cap, the bars w/mounts get stowed. It’s 5 minutes to install and even with noico on the lid I can still hear them when they’re on. That noise is the turbulence in the wallet. For weekend canoe trips with a dd I’d choose light and removable, for an rtt, I’d go with something sturdier. Thule makes bar mounts that literally snap to the bases so both bars can be installed in about 1 minute.

 

I am making the move from a Yakima Road warrior basket to a Grand Teton rack. I agree the MPG was not worth leaving it on all the time. I did when I had a Subaru but that thing got such good MPG even with it on. I am getting a permanent rack now because I was suffering heavily with the basket up there. I averaged about 12 MPG last time I ran with that on for a trip. This last weekend without it on there but my RTT still I was averaging 15. I can't speak right now but after I get my Sherpa and run it for a bit I can report back on MPG difference between stock rack and the grand teton. I'm taking my tent off this week so I'll be running just stock bars and the Crows nest till I get the front rack in. I would imagine the noise will be better and possibly better MPG but we will see.
