So much disinformation... Cost of replacing batteries of a tesla 3 is $3,000 to $7,000 and a new battery lasts for 300k-500k miles. How long your Tacoma engine lasts without maintenance? What about trans, diffs, tcase? Will it cost you less than $3,000 to $7,000 replace those, or more?

If you intend to use a Tacoma for more than 300k-500k miles, you will easily pay full price of the truck in repair and maintenance bills.

I never knew the price of replacement batteries. Very interesting.

Yes, I always assumed it to be a significant cost (thanks to disinformation), and people always throw out this "battery is a fortune to replace" argument. But in fact it is considerably affordable for something that would last for ~400k miles. I mean you would need to do 80 oil changes for an ICE in 400k miles, if you assume one every 5k miles. If we assume one oil change costs $50, that alone costs $4k.

I believe cost of batteries will come down even further in the future and they will last for longer. Plus, they can be better batteries and potentially extend the range of the car.

The prototype batteries Tesla is working on right now lasts for a million miles. Once those hit the market, it will probably be a lifetime component.

Don't worry, you'll still be able to drive an ICE car on the road in the future. You can join these guys.....:D

I’m excited for a hybrid Tacoma. We have a Tesla in the family and no matter what anyone says, it’s fast and has next-to no moving parts. Charging it is “free” since we have solar, and most new homes are being built with solar.

The future is cool. But I’ll make sure to pick up a C5 or something obnoxious so I can still hear an engine.

Yeh solid state batteries will change a lot and never know what other battery tech will come about. But if maintained properly current lithium batteries should last their expected life.

In 2020 there were less than 5 electric vehicle fires . In that time 250,000 gas engine cars caught fire where 400 people died in the fires. No one died in the EV fires. Also most Ev battery fires can be extinguished by any functioning fire department.

these scare stories sound like the ignorant peasants saying “if we switch from candles to light bulbs we will have more risk of electrocution”.

also don’t know why people fear self driving cars. Even if the self driven cars kill people by accident they will be infinitely better than humans behind the wheel with phones in their hands and our feeble skills. Really? You have never seen a human make a mistake behind the wheel? Self driving doesn’t have to be perfectly safe. It just needs to be safer than us shitty human drivers which is easy lol .

I really like the idea of owning a EV and having solar panels to fill it up. True definition of living off the grid.

All the carport roofs will be converted to solar panels and the landlors will be able to charge you for electricity used to top up. Helps pay off their infrastructure, everyone can charge, etc. It's not hard to see the future on this.

    400,000 miles / 20 mpg = 20,000 gallons
    @ $2/gallon that’s $40,000
    @ $4/gallon that’s $80,000
YMMV but battery plus charging vs fuel is not the issue.

Sorry I will not beholding to China for the batteries we will need. You think that these charging stations will go up overnight. Sorry that will not happen and there will not be enough unless you have them on the side of the highway every mile. My gas eater Tacoma will last me for years. I have no intention on giving into the electric show boaters.

Literally nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has said at all that charging stations will go up overnight, especially not in this thread, and definitely not by @Tripod1404. You made that argument up yourself to have a strawman to knock down when there wasn't one.

This, right here, is the kind of misinformed opinions that get stated as if they were based on any factual data that get too much traction for their confident incorrectness.

I swear, sometimes I believe giving public access to the internet was a mistake.

I was wondering myself where that came from.

So many people have a preconceived notion in their head and are actively fighting to support their positions at all costs.

Let's see how expensive it is to upkeep a 6-10yr old Tesla model 3 when the time comes. A lot more can go wrong than just the batteries.

As compared to an ICE car with a ridiculous amount more moving parts?

Still compare it to maybe a Camry or Accord. Out of warranty Tesla parts are $$$. Probably 8 out of 10 Accord/Camrys will run 8yr 150K miles without a hickup. One trip or 2 trip to the shop with an out of warranty Tesla and that will wreck your savings.

Any case, an EV Tacoma is easily 5+yrs out. Anyone wamting an EV truck within next few yrs will have to go Tesla or one of these new manufacturers.

One example doesn't mean much. I can go on YouTube and find teslas with broken door locks and all kinds of engine drive motors going out too. Time and time again.

Go get you that Tesla then.

I worked at a Tesla approved body shop. It is a PITA to repair a Tesla. Parts delays, tons of procedures to follow. Almost every Tesla gets set up on jigs (frame equipment). A bumper tap on a Tesla can turn into a $15k repair quickly. All that stupid roof glass has to come off to paint the quarters and sail panels. That costs a couple thousand alone. Pretty sure you have to be a certified Tesla approved body shop to even buy some of the parts. Need to have their software to reset everything once done, also big $$.

Take a Tacoma and a Tesla in the shop with equal damage. The Tesla will take 10X longer to repair. Some of the cars were in there for months!
