This is truly unfortunate! I hope I can get out there before it's all shut down. In Wisconsin, we barely had any trails to begin with. My favorite trail is cut into about 10 pieces due to sections being shut down due to erosion concerns.

The litter on the trails is just embarrassing, IMO. I know the people I roll with are respectful. It's too bad so many are not.

 

I was just in Moab, while the damage/trash is a magnitude less than Southern California it is notably worse than prior. So disappointing that people can’t be responsible. So my belief the likely outcome will be access restrictions at a minimum.

+1 comment, I think the Moab locals would support capacity/access restrictions. It was so busy with too much traffic in town. The Tourists are ruining it for the locals.

 

This. I’ll get shit for this but I’m down for restrictions on motorized access to trails. Not a ban, but restrictions to show people that it it’s a privilege not a right.

 

Getting with that side, too. Even before the Covid it was getting a bit much. Haven't been out there since.

I work really hard to keep in shape and would rather hike. Foot traffic will have less impact than the flexbros. Give it a few years for the sand, mud and wind to wipe out their damage and then open it back up again.

 

I’ve been off-roading annually in the part of Moab which is in danger of being closed since ‘08 and I have seen some major changes, especially since SxS’s became popular. My suggestion would be to require a permit to use the area then put the $$ into trail restoration and enforcement.

 

I have to agree. Sometimes areas need to close down for a couple of years so that they can self-restore back to a natural state. Wheeling is fun and all, but I have to admit that I dont stop and appreciate the scenery nearly as much as I do when I'm on foot, or even on two wheels.

Heck yeah. 20 years ago I could only afford an eBay intake in my crappy 4-banger. Now I can trick out my taco with a supercharger, cams, lockers and winches. Not on social media for the show though.

 

I've never been an offroader-definitely more into the camping/hiking world but was always a gearhead. There always seemed to be tension there between the camps regarding conservation. That makes "overlanding" a strange place to be, and it probably has something to do with my bias against heavy modding.

I think with the influx of the modding/tuner types into overlanding/car camping, you have a large demographic with full wallets that got into it to enjoy the cars, not the nature. They build the trucks up, go on a short trip to get all of their photos for the gram and treat our wilderness the same as they treat their urban streets. That asshat in Tacomabeast's crew that carved into red rock is a perfect example. When overland culture falls out of favor they will be on to the next trend, but the true outdoorsmen will pay the price for years to come.

 

I learned this as well when I moved to a new area and eventually started running local roads. I had driven them a hundred times but never saw the incredible views and old buildings until I was on foot.
