I forget how the story goes, but I think they told him he needed basically an off grid living permit once, but didn't come back for like a year or two.

Haha! Yeah, I meant stay as in camp there....for a few nights or whatever. Not live there. After re-reading my post I can see how that sounds...LOL.

Also, fire restrictions obviously vary by state, but I've noticed that hasn't stopped many idiots out there from doing it anyway and burning half the state. Seems like it happens here in AZ, and up in OR (where we used to live) just about every year. I try to make a PSA statement about choosing not burning down our forests whenever I can.

speaking of fires, anyone have any recommendations on portable fire pits? i know you should always use pre-existing fire rings, but im starting to have mixed feelings about them. there was a last line of defense video a year or so ago where he was using a fire pit and someone threw bullets in there previously. they popped/exploded while he was using the ring. not the most likely scenario, but im starting to think it may be smart to have a portable pit.

ive seen this from wolf and grizzly, https://www.wolfandgrizzly.com/products/fire-safe is it worth it? it wouldnt be a way around a fire ban, my understanding is liquid fuel only during a ban, so propane would work.

so is that wolf and grizzly worth it or just more overland hyped gear?

Oh, you missed the one last year in Utah were a few dipshits decided to shoot a target with a flare gun on a dry ass hill in July to "see what would happen"

I think that is extremely overpriced for what it is and there are probably much cheaper options out there. To be fair, anything that comes up on a channel like that makes me cringe so I have an inherent bias.

If I was worried about fire restrictions I would just get something like this: https://www.campchef.com/back-patio/fire-pits/sequoia-fire-pit.html

If you camp out west it is almost inevitable that you will encounter fire restrictions unless you camp in early spring. So my point is that if you have to take up space it might as well be with something that is usable 12 months out of the year.

It's possible to be, and often is... both :D

The benefit of an aluminum tray like that is they cool very rapidly so you aren't stuck at camp if you have a morning fire for hours until your fire ring cools, plus they tend to fold up fairly small.

The propane route like @levie125 pointed out works well and would be good to get around the fire restrictions usually, but I like the pops and sizzles of a real campfire, plus the smell afterwards embedded in your jackets, etc. It's just not the same, and I'd more than likely just leave it behind since its one more piece of bulky gear plus a large propane bottle

Not to mention the group of kids that lit fireworks in an area that has signs that explicitly say, "no fireworks any time of year".... :/

Me likes the fire more too! I do agree with all your points about the fire ring's portability, etc.

Let's be honest though, 95% of us are car camping and there isn't anything minimalist about it. I think @mrtonyd needs to buy both and let us know what he thinks of them so we can live vicariously through his expenditures.

I've seen that too. Probably definitely overhyped overland gear, but the idea is great, and it looks pretty sweet. I've been thinking about how I could DIY something like that.

I know nothing about bikes but it seems like pretty decent quality for being so cheap. took it on a cruise last night. Definitely brought me back to being a kid, Cruising around single speed with a coaster brake.
The heritage aspect is pretty cool as well.
    All in all I’m juiced.

yea it doesnt have to be the wolf and grizzly one, just the first company that comes to mind. there are a few out there with different styles. its more a product idea than that particular model. i found some on etsy that fold differently.

this came about when my aunt asked me about those biolite stove things. they burn logs but are almost the size of a jackery or goal zero battery. if i already have a gas grill (coleman road trip or something) that takes up a ton of space, i dont want something else for fire/heat thats just as bulky.

a friend makes engraved wood carving things. i asked him about this but said his cutter only works with wood and someone would need a plasma cutter to go through metal.

i typed this a couple hours ago but got pulled away for work.
