I believe it's 12 years from the date that the vehicle was first put into service.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah ha, thats why they told me I had until 2024. Oh thats just a surface bubble under the paint. I'v scraped and its not that much rust. Ill check the box frame again, it looked ok maybe a bit rusty, hard to tell with this black crap the PO put on it before me.

I'm trying to determine if he is genuinely concerned about his rust, or just trying to show off his beautiful SCSB :D (JK, in case sarcasm is lost in text)

Sounds like you've had a fair amount of feedback about the rust, but sweet truck brother!

That would be considered "mint" in Canada. If it bothers you, strip and rust treat, then coat with your favourite rust proof. Drive on, don't stress.

not bad for a new england frame honestly. If it didnt have any sort of class action lawsuit work to get done to it I would clean up the rust and paint over it. Then fluid film it before every winter season until the end of time.

Oh yea I'v got Por 15 and a spray can of Rust Bullet. Im taking the wire wheel and abrasive disk to some spots. I'v got a blasting gun too Im planing on filling with baking soda and getting in tight areas like shock mounts etc. The best thing is going to be the fluid film, and yup till the end of, well Toyota time, hoping to get to 250k.

What's to stop an unscrupulous dealer to undercoat over bad rust and pawn it off to someone else?

With 1st gens, it was 15 years from the date it went into service, so a 2004 Tacoma had until 2019. I'm sure it's the same for 2nd gens, except 12 years in their case.

Nothing I guess, not like dealers haven't been known to do shady stuff before. I would hope any reputable dealer would care enough about their reputation to not try and pull that on someone, but in the end you have to take it upon yourself to make sure you're getting what you pay for (or what your warranty pays for).

Painting over rust to hide it is something I'd be more wary of a private seller doing than a dealership

I trust Toyota's rust proofing is the best available, Im sure garages do sketchy stuff. Or like my rig the PO sprayed this black undercoating goo I cant get off. Im not going to be able to paint it in some areas.

The stuff that Toyota puts on is junk lol. After you either get it sprayed by Toyota or have the frame replaced (unlikely) depending upon what state in New England you live in, get it Fluid filmed or better yet woolwaxed every spring and fall. You will thank me.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I think the dealer put that black crap on it; ask me how I know but your frame looks really solid

It must keep the inside of the frame from rusting, that and they plug it. Gotta undercoat here in north east, think that will keep my rust spots at bay?

Undercoating - properly applied - will help prevent rust. It does not stop rust. That's why Ziebart charges so much for undercoating, but requires an annual re-spray. All they do is cover up the rust that got started in places they missed. Ask me how I know that.

I don't believe so. It's 12 years from date of manufacture (or something similar).......

Corrosion free is supposed to be superior rust proofing. The military did testing on it and found out that it was 80% effective. More than rust check, crown, fluid film.
If it has lasted this long and that's the shape it's in, I wouldn't worry about it.
