hi everyone, my taco had a recall for the fuel pump, alas they put a new fuel pump in Oct of 2020 and replaced a hose. I have lost mpg's. they are blaming the winter blend I said nonsense had no problem all winter long in 2020. the service manager stated he has been working on Toyota's for 25 years, I said, good for you, now replace the fuel pump and hose you guys put in. He said the fuel pump has nothing to due with mpg's. seriously!!!!

Fuel is metered by injectors not pump.

    Yeah.
    Welcome to TW!

Honestly, I don't think they are wrong saying that the fuel pump and hose have nothing to do with MPG. They likely disconnected your battery while they did the work, so the truck has to re-learn everything.

I'd give it some time before worrying about the fuel pump change causing your MPG issue.

I gotta agree Winter Blend Any Extra Idle Time??

How many MPG did you lose ??

Are you down Below 9 mpg That is when I get Concerned.

Are you smelling gasoline or seeing it running off the Tank because the Line is leaking??

like I said, the fuel pump was fixed in Oct no smell of gas. I believe I have given the truck plenty of time to relearn. From 22/20 mpg to 16 to 18 mpg non stop highway travels

My mpg went from 17-18 in the summer to 15's in the fall and 14 during the winter. So the timing of your pump replacement seems to line up pretty well with the time frame winter gas starts to show up. I'd give it more time now as it warms up and the summer gas returns in the next month.

There is no traditional in-line fuel filter. There is the "sock" over the gas tank pickup which is a very fine mesh. That's it for the 2nd gen Tacomas. Haven't seen any issues related to lack of fuel filtration.

Well then are your rings shot checking the oil for gasoline??

Does the Exhaust burn black all the time to the point it looks like a smoke screen.

The missing Gasoline is either draining in the oil burning causing constant black smoke or leaking which one is it doing??

The pump seriously has nothing to do with fuel mileage.

Most modern cars no longer come with fuel filters. The fuel pumps are in the tanks and there is a fuel sock before the pump. Hell, even my 2008 Canyon didn't have a fuel filter. You can always splice one in if you like. But, if you're not traveling internationally, chances are you won't need one.

Also, yes, winter blend fuel is a thing. Colder weather also affects temp as the ECU has to compensate to make the truck run properly. My truck was getting around 16-18 highway (70 MPH) in the winter and has seen 21 and 22 now that it has warmed back up.

The fuel pump won't effect the MPG, and when they change it, they'll disconnect the battery which will reset the MPG. The MPG average is up to the driver tbh. I used to average 15 mpg on stock and then it went all the way up to 19 overtime without changing anything. Im back down to 15 with lift wheels and tires.
