I know. I saw their post. Looked like they were going to go with plate across but I didn’t investigate too much.

Im following suite of what Harry did and making my own cross bar and skid. I already have a bumper that I’ll modify to make work.

I’ve found what helps me the most when trying to mig thin garbage is no/minimal gap and clean metal on both sides. Then just do a bunch of thicc tack welds.

Clean metal, good fitment, and that looks like it’s pretty thin. So make sure you are using thin wire, 0.023” Thin wire makes a huge difference on thinner metals.

With my Miller 211 I also tend to run the settings slightly colder and a lot slower wire speed than their little recommendations list has things. But the settings are sort of a personal thing for my “style” per se

Put a piece of copper or brass right behind the metal you are trying to weld. This issue with mig welding is the wire speed mixed with the heat blows holes through the material. With a brass/copper backing the wire essentially bounces off it and then melts back into the sheet metal.

Or buy a tig welder and never look back :)

Yeah the gaps are pretty good I think except for the corners, I made it a little bigger than the hole so I can just grind the excess material and hope it will look clean. It will get seam sealed anyways for looks.

Yeah I have been running a little less heat and more wire. And I need some thinner wire I’m running .030

I start my welding classes in the fall so I’ll be in the market soon for a tig! Any recommendations for this kinda stuff? Doesn’t have to be Miller.

I'll just add that joining dissimilar material thicknesses can be a real challenge and it looks like you've got a pretty good disparity there. Which means that for you to get enough energy (heat) into the base material to get it to puddle, it will almost certainly be wayyyy too much for the thinner material. That's a hard ask for an experienced welder. As others said, prep is everything, but when it comes time to weld out start your puddle on the thicker material and gentle work it into the thinner material. Repeat this for the entire length of weld. Practice is key, it takes a ton of seat time to make welds look anything close to what Harry puts out. He's both an artist and a fabricator.

Edit: I'll also add that many times, the opportunity for good welds starts with a good design. When components fit up properly, are the right materials, and are finished right the welding becomes more of a formality than a challenge.

    :D:D:D

well yeah it was a joke.. but thanks for the advice:thumbsup:. And the material is the exact same thickness. It does take time and practice, I was just saying I have never welded metal that thin. It took me a year and half to get where I’m comfortable with structural pieces.
