It sucks, I tell you...
I gotta try this while I'm still able to.

I have some equipment that's still suitable after all these years.
But Amazon has gotten a lot of my money lately...

The thing about the AT is that every week or less one has the opportunity to resupply at small towns (villages, really) close to the Trail.
And there are the occasional hostels where you can stay cheap and get a shower.
The stink is real.

I have a little book put out by the AT Conservancy that lays it all out.

 

A guy is shopping at the supermarket when he noticed an attractive woman looking him over. She came over and said:
“Hi, I think I remember you. If I’m not mistaken, you’re the father of one of my kids.”
He thought about it for a minute and replied “Were you the stripper at my brother’s bachelor party that we bent over the pool table and took turns with while your partner did us in the butt with a strap-on?”
“Uhhhh, no. I’m your son’s teacher.”

 

That one was worth waiting for.

I've got one book about the AT. I've heard much more about it as well. I've read AWOL on The Appalachian. I definitely would like to give it a whirl. Easter weekend, I did 15.5 miles at Big Bend. That was a long day for sure.

 

A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day, their passions overcame them in the office and they took off for her house. Exhausted from the afternoon's activities, they fell asleep and awoke at around 8 p.m. As the man threw on his clothes, he told the woman to take his shoes outside and rub them through the grass and dirt. Confused, she nonetheless complied and he slipped into his shoes and drove home. "Where have you been?" demanded his wife when he entered the house. "Darling," replied the man, "I can't lie to you. I've been having an affair with my secretary. I fell asleep in her bed and didn't wake up until eight o'clock." The wife glanced down at his shoes and said, "You liar! You've been playing golf!"

 

I want to hike Big Bend. Any suggestions for an old fart? I can do about 10 miles round trip if it’s mostly flat. A lot less with hard climbing.

 

Hmmm Google doesn’t even know that one.

 

A man escapes from prison where he has been for 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns, and finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair. He ties the girl to the bed and he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, and then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he's in there, the husband tells his wife, "Listen, this guy is an escaped convict, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail and hasn't seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex, don't resist, don't complain, do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is probably very dangerous. If he gets angry, he'll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you." His wife responds, "He wasn't kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked me if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you too!

 

There is a lot of short hikes in Big Bend. I'll have a look at my hiking book and make a few suggestions. Santa Elena Canyon would be a great place to start.

Yeah, everyone says AWOL's guide (by Dave "AWOL" Miller) is terrific.
I got the one from the AT Conservancy.
Don't want to carry both.

They say you get your "Trail Legs" after a few weeks.
Up til then you gotta be careful you don't injure yourself (feet and ankles, especially).
Gotta ease into it and let yourself toughen up.
