Dealer Claims Rear Brake Shoes Half Worn at 8800 miles?

Just had the 2020 TRD Pro in for it's 18 month service.

Truck has 8800 miles on it. Gentle driving, zero off road.
Averaging 20-21 hwy for mileage, so I don't think the brakes are hanging up.

Dealer claims the front pads are at 9mm and the rear shoes are down to 3mm. He said the stock shoes are installed with 5mm thickness and that I'll need to replace the shoes by 10,000 miles. What?

That sounds a bit insane to me. 8800 miles of gentle driving and the rear shoes are half gone?

For comparison, my FJ had 51,000 on it when I traded it in and the stock disc pads all the way around were in mint shape, about half way worn. Same driving style.

The vehicle before that had 69,000 when I traded it in and again, the pads were excellent because I'm not a crazy driver.

Any explanation for Tacoma brake shoes wearing that fast?

I find that hard to believe.
I never changed the rear on my 16 when I traded it at 45k and when I had my 1st gen 2000 I never changed them past 100k and it always passed inspection

Right, usually drums/shoes last a LONG time.

I checked my tread depth on the tires and in the same mileage I've used 1/32nd of tread. From 11/32nd new per Goodyear to 10/32nd today. So there is no way I'm blowing through brakes by driving hard.

Little of this, little of that.
I would take a look for yourself, that sounds highly highly unlikely.

man - that is hard to believe...I travel up a down small mountains DAILY, using my brakes...I have 106K miles on my truck, it gets serviced every 5K miles - at the dealership - and last check they said my brakes were fine.

I call horseshit! Not a chance they’re that worn at 8.8k. They will go past 100k in my experience. Had 150k on my first gen and they were still good.

Unless you drove all 8800 miles with your foot on both pedals at the same time or have some major malfunctions with all your brakes I highly doubt that's the case. Drum shoes are built to last a long time. Get in there yourself and take a look.

    I'm the only driver. :)

I use the parking brake once a week, just to make sure it gets flexed and doesn't rust into place.

Thanks though, a good thing to check. Or if I had a teenager trying brake stands, but I'd notice that in tire wear too.

I'm going to wait until the next service in Oct and make them show me all this wear when the drum is off for it's inspection. Sure seems odd they'd wear that fast.

Remove the rubber plug and check the shoes from behind the wheel.

They're only about 4mm new and last 200k. I'd say they measured incorrectly more than anything else.

So they actually pulled the drums and checked shoe wear? Did you have any brake concerns you mentioned to them?

I believe you can measure through the backing plate.

100% BS. I have 187K on my original drum shoes, they look fine. And this is hard daily driving and off-roading

My 2009 had 196,000 miles on it on the original drums and shoes. I would get a second opinion on that!

I agree with the disbelief. Just took my 2020 pro in for the 10k service, but nothing was mentioned about the brakes, and I'm in stop and go Houston traffic pretty much daily

Any time the dealership has told me something I'm skeptical of, I always ask if I can be brought into the shop and see it myself. Don't have them bring the part to you. You have no clue if that's from your vehicle or not.

Shouldn't the front brakes wear out faster though?
