Buy a Rivian skateboard and put on a Tacoma body. Problem solved!

I bet Toyota does a clean slate design on an electric pickup. It could be called something totally different than Tacoma. Toyota just doesn't jump into things and their R&D pays off in the long run.

They're coming. The current trucks are going to be relatively high priced but I'm betting we have one within 10 yrs....

It’s not 2012 anymore, where these speculations about evs made some sense.

5 friends , 4 coworkers and few other losers I know drive evs ( leaf , bolt , model 3 , s and y). Not one of them would ever go back. It’s consensus that the pros far outweigh the cons.

Here in San Diego they are very common (Tesla’s mainly) . It’s like seeing a Toyota Corolla ... expected to be all over and nothing special.

you need to rent one for a day , or find someone with one and ask them what is about. Forget all the speculation and actually see what they are capable of in person and I’m sure 99% of you will say “yup EVs are gonna win”.

I was one of the people who thought big smart phones with a giant screen and no keyboard was lame and probably wouldn’t be popular when we have blackberry phones , laptops and desktops for our internet needs .... ya you all sound like me back then lol .

for home owners with solar ,like me , it will not make a big difference if we charge up at home. So no additional burden to the “grid”.
But I get many will charge up at stations . Maybe the tax for roads and such can be collected there just like now at the pump

Also even if we keep using gasoline to “power “ the power plants for charging all the EVs , it would still save over half the fuel used. Just like how a diesel electric train has work for over 80 years . It’s much better to burn even the fossil fuel, make electricity, then use it for an electric motor.
You will save way more gasoline even if you still buy gas, get a big gas generator and charge ur ev with it ....

Even a lot of the ghetto apartments around town are tossing up solar panels on their complex roof tops . Just saying... things are a changing

The main point here is Toyota is not putting out an EV truck at minimum 5yrs away.

Correct me if I am wrong but brushless DC motors basically run forever with the only wearable part being the bearings correct? It's crazy to think about the power-plant of a vehicle not only lasting well over 500,000 miles but needing very little maintenance to do so. There was a time when computers in vehicles were unreliable but thats not true anymore, hell my phone is on 24/7 for the past 4 years and it still works just fine. I am very excited for a EV truck!

Honestly at this point the Tacoma is pretty far behind the market for the "overland" crowd as it is, not surprising they are behind on the HEV/EV field as well.

Probably true for a strictly EV vehicle. But the next gen Tacoma will most likely have a hybrid option. Which means they could easily also make a plug-in hybrid that has a short "electric only" range. Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid is like that, it has 375 combined system power and gets 49mpg. I think it has something like 30 miles electric only range. Such an option would be great for anyone who commutes with a Tacoma.

solar has never been touted as the entire answer. It’s fine where it works and has a long way to go before it hits any growth ceiling but other avenues are also just beginning to grow and will fit other nitches. Nuclear was justifiably put on hold because the risks of fission energy and waste disposal far outweighed the benefits but we are approaching the time when that will again be an option. Nit picking one aspect of one source of renewable energy is a bit silly when there’s so much more of it than we can possibly use. 1300W per square meter from the sun every second of every day of every year driving the winds, the storms, the growth of every leaf and blossom, not to mention the tug of the moon generating tidal swings measured in meters at latitudes the sun is too far from zenith. Pick a problem, find a solution for it.

My other car is a rav4 hybrid and if there was a hybrid option for this truck its what I would have. The instant boost from the electric motor in the rav4 is fantastic. The rav4 gets filled up once every two weeks with continuous driving, the truck makes it half that even with its larger tank.

I personally won't be going full electric for another 10-15 years. Too expensive, too inconvenient.

I too am looking forward to a hybrid Tacoma. If I can get another 12+ (hopefully more - much more) mpg I would be more than happy! I don't care about full electric as I see my next truck as a hybrid that will give me a good decade or more to decide on whether full electric or stay hybrid.

The rav4 Prime is next to impossible to get and is selling over MSRP, I would replace my Tacoma with a rav4 if it only was a bit more off-road capable. I really don't need a pickup anymore, even on long overland trips my dog has most of the back all to himself with all my gear fitting under the deck.

This fits my experience. The dealers near me threw crappy wheels on theirs and marked it up by $8K. It's still there, I think. I believe Toyota isn't incentivized to sell more of them because of the tax rebates and credits -- there was an earlier discussion of this that may have been on this forum.

But yeah, lift a Rav4 Prime and you could get so many places. They're going to sell millions of those things once they start cranking them out. A 40-mile range is really good, and then you have the gas engine for all the fussy boys.
