Need help with belt problem

Hey all, I decided today to check on a noise that I noticed these past couple days. Kind of a whining noise at idle. What made it odd was this was accurring well after warm up. So, I decided to look into the NST pulley that I installed recently.

I rented needed tourque wrench and breaker bar. loosed belt, loosened bolt, did not remove the pulley, just added some locktite, and reinstalled at the recommended 200 ft/lbs. Put back the belt. And checked all routing and allignment.

Started my truck and noticed a very intense whine. When I turn the steering wheel, it startsed to squeal. Immediately turned off. Check belts and all again. Started up & quick squeel, then quite. But, when I rev the motor it gives that horrible squeal sign.

I know everything is correct. Dont think I missed anything.

Note: Not sure how much play the belt should have, so this line reprsents the amount play in the belt after reinstall:

Could this be my prob. Thinking a new belt is needed. And if so, does anyone know of any good brand belts they would recommend. My truck is less than a year old, less than 8000 miles, and the belt already needs replacing.

sounds like the belt to the power steering pump is loose.

i've always used Gates and never had any fail on me.

 

on the new tacomas 4.0 v6......there is only one belt, the serpentine belt.

sounds like you may need to push on the tensioner again Eddie, and see if the slack goes out some more...needs to be tighter as far as i know. it could be the power steering pump pulley too though.

i kinda wish we had only one belt on the 3.4 v6.....alot easier to change!!

 

I dunno, if that one belt fails you lose everything.

 

With you on that, only thing is; I can only use a 14mm socket to turn counter clockwise so to relieve tention. Once I let off, it automatically returns to its factory set tention.

Dont think I can add additional tention, or can I???

 

nah, i dont think you can add any more tension to it. try pulling the tensioner back a few times and tightening back up......and crank the truck and see if you can pin point exactly where the chirp is coming from. only thing i can think of brotha!

Thanks for the help guys. After checking and checking again, I came to the conclusion that the belt was stretched, not sure how. But I could actually slide the belt off the tentioner without releaving it.

So, went to my local Autozone and had one of their ASE cert. workers check my belt. They agreed, too much play. So I ordered a Gatorback belt, and headed back to the garage with hope in mind.

Well, while reading the notes on the Belt pckg. I notice it says smooth on smooth & grooves on grooves. Noted...

Got under the truck and examined the routing patern for install. Low and behold, I see that there is a grooved part of the belt on one of the rollers.

For some reason it got miss routed, but was still able to function with minor default. Corrected it and BAM, all noises, belt play, and problems dissapeared.

Well in ending I still replaced belt, thinking that I might have lessoned the integrity of it. And glad I did. That Gatorback belt was a way tighter fit to get on there, and that belt should last a long time to come.

glad you got it squared away bro!! those gatorback belts are pretty damn good...tough belt!
