Hey y’all! New to this thread. It might be sort of a redneck idea, but what if the shield system for long voyages were constructed in space out of pre-existing space debris? I know that there’s some engineering challenges there, but mass is mass and its already in orbit. Aside from burrowing into an asteroid or developing some next level tech, seems like a fair option to consider.

Yes, im aware that i just said the equivalent of “what if we covered the rocket in trash?” and no, I’m not a raccoon with a keyboard - thats crazytalk.

    Welcome :hattip:

I think all that space junk would be hard to corral and would has all sorts of toxic crap in and on it. And it’s moving pretty fast in all sorts of different orbits. It’s a no from me though I have no idea what I’m talking about :D

Yes. BO is not a real project for bezos. He just wants a rocket ride. The people he put in charge are doing everything they can to build it up though, with what little he has given them.

You'd burn too much fuel gathering it all up and getting the extra weight out of orbit.

BO, ULA, Boeing, etc are all going to be really pissed if and when starship works. It's such a versatile base that they won't be able to compete. Launch a docking hub, dock a few starships to it, and boom first private space station that would quickly dwarf the iss. Land it on the moon and have a structure larger than any pod. And if they do something crazy like drain the fuel and install an airlock they gain a tremendous amount of real estate for labs, workshops, etc.

That's exactly what's he's bren doing. When you factor in wages, facility costs, etc, 1 billion a year in the space industry is barely doing more than breaking even. He wants the rollercoaster ride to space. That's new shepherd. Beyond that I don't think he cares if BO fails or succeeds. But he's telling them he does because that's the only way to keep the talent until he gets his ride.

I saw him 2 years ago at Kennedy Space Center. He spoke during the Apollo 11 50-year reunion event.

The NASA Media channel has been showing footage of Mike Collins from back in the Gemini days..

    Crazy EVA training.

In mission fight footage of him and John Young in the capsule.

I can’t believe how cramped the inside of Gemini was. To think the longest mission was just short of two weeks is incredible to me.
