Idk honestly, the shop i used has squared me away on all my issues ive had with the Tacoma FJ transfer case leaking and getting the timing belt/water pump 100K service on the GX to a T.

I remember over the last couple years having to add coolant to the truck. I never honestly thought anything of it until i got the #6 misfire and even then i didnt take it serious serious until recently.

I think im the result of some sideways luck. the truck never left me on the side of the road but i imagine it was slowly damaging itself.

I will ask why it didnt get picked up when i brought it by last month for some answers but for now i need my truck up and running again.

5050$ was just the cost of the motor. the shop is completing the swap. Says it should be done Friday or Monday.

 

I would have found one out of a junk yard for 1/5 of that price.

 

But they come with a warranty

 

No chance i'd do that. Had a buddy with an FJ with the same issue i had and he got rinsed and would have been better off just going the route im going.

Unknown history of the motor and by the time i spent the labor cracking both motors open and checking if they were viable i've:

1. Spent a shit ton of time (GSMTR is in two months and i will be going)

2. Probs spent close to that in labor cost getting work done.

3.Lead time on Machine shops are insane (heard 8 weeks minimum sometimes)

4.I have the money set aside for when shit hits the fan and it's hitting the fan now lol.

anddd this motor has a 3 year 100K mile warranty. Piece of mind im sure to have driving it to and from TN and wheeling/camping trips.

 

I would have rolled the dice as well but I am cheap.

 

yeah no sense in putting in a engine that cost more than the vehicle is worth. the 4.0 is godly anyway, so I'm told. Surprised to see one blow up.

 

I agree, i normally dont go the all in route.

It makes 0 sense whatsoever.

But this tacoma was my first truck i got when i was 16 11 years ago now. I've learned everything so far mechanically about vehicles, and wheeling, and mods, and met amazing people and have memories i'll never forget for better or worse.

anddd ive probs already thrown 20K into it between mods and 4x4 swapping it so 5K more isnt that big a deal to me lol.


Also: 4.0 from 03-06 was trash. HG P/N got changed at some point in 06 because folks were blowing head gaskets around 200K. Mine went right after 200K and my buddies went at 190K.



TLDR: Sentimental Value trumps KBB all day every fucking day

 

hence why i haven't brought myself to list my truck for sale yet. it's my first truck and my life has completely changed since they day i got it...engaged, house, two kids, dog, etc etc...my 3yo daughter started crying when i told her i might sell it to someone else. F me

 

I told my wife the tacoma will probs outlast our marriage lol.

You've got a tough decision to make. I just ripped the band-aid and ponied up the cash.

I personally would keep it. If you own it outright there's no worries.

 

i'm 6mo away from paying it off...i have the cash to pay it off now, but that's a good chuck of change out of the savings account.

 

I think the GX is the vehicle I will have for the rest of my life.
Same as you my Tacoma changed my life as well.
Had cars all throughout highschool and college, bought the Tacoma to move out to Colorado. Met a lot of awesome TW guys, met my wife and she partially liked me because of the Tacoma. Then had a kid and realized the Tacoma was too small. No regrets whatsoever.
You already have the GX get a beater truck to do truck things and mod the GX.

 

Keep it.. pay it off and keep making the payments to yourself .. save the money up until you can get whatever you want.. imho once you pay it off that's when you start making money...

 

or, i could just keep my current truck since it is dead nuts reliable and my GX is kinda a POS...

 

But it’s a unicorn... the fun has already started with your daughter helping you build the GX. Great times with my daughter “helping” me work on it.

 

For sure pay it off and continue to drive and enjoy it. You're at the end of the tunnel. You need the freed up cash for some sorta emergency or what?

Its crazy how a machine can lead to so many different highs and lows and amazing experiences. Idc what repair comes up at this point. The tacoma is here to stay forever.

I could use the equity to pay off a high balance credit card and free up quite a bit more every month on top of the truck payment that would also be gone.

ehhh 6 months from now you can throw what used to be a truck payment into the credit card.

Thought about transferring the credit over to a 0% for 18months type deal? You aint gotta firesale your memories for a CC
