2013 tacoma v6 manual transmission gear oil.

Quick questions guys are there 2 types of gear oil for the manual transmission? If so what is it I see there is synthetic is that it only synthetic reason is I'm trying to change my transmission oil ?

75w-90 gear oil is acceptable synthetic or not.

I (and many others) personally prefer Redline MT90.

Note:

The vast majority of 75w-90 gear oils are for differentials and are GLV (GL5) the difference is GL5 has higher sulfur content that is destructive to the yellow metals (brass synchros) in the transmission that differentials do not have.

The transfer case can use GL5.

 

I put Redline synthetic gear oils in all my driveline and MT90 in my transmission when my truck had 15k on it, I'm at 67k now. Transmission seemed to shift better after especially when cold.

 

My owner's manual states GL4/GL5 should be used in the transfer case, I was considering using Redline MT90 instead of the GL5 I have used in the previous two gear oil changes. Do you think using Redline MT90 is worth the extra cost over the GL5 gear oil I have been using for the last 14 years?

 

I've had good luck with Lucas and Royal Purple. Make sure you use GL4.

 

In the transfer case? Nah. Unnecessary. I would use normal GL5 in the transfer case as MT90 is some pretty specialized and expensive stuff ment specifically for manual transmissions. (Hence "MT" and 90 is the weight) The transfer case doesn't need super special lube like that and if anything the added pressure protection of the sulfur additives in GL5 will benefit the transfercase's planetary gear sets.

I have put MT-90 in my transfer case before out of fear of cross contamination but after learning a little more about how they're independently sealed I'm no longer worried about it and think GL5 offers better gear protection.

MT-90 isn't going to hurt though if you want to use it, plus the capacity is only like 1.2 quarts or something so not overtly expensive either.

I work for my companies engineering department, though I do not currently hold a BSE degree.

I used to work for Toyota in their parts department so I have a little inside knowledge.

My Uncle was a Toyota Master Tech for 30 something years and taught me a lot of what I know.

Toyota's are just kind of my special interest and I have a bit of down time at work so I just research and absorb infor from TW because I'm always interested in making my truck better.

I'm not always right but I try to give the best info I can to help others at all times.

 

I use the GL4 Redline MT90 in both my transmission and transfer case. I’ve since learned the transfer case can take a GL5 oil but the GL4 in both won’t hurt. The important thing is that you DONT use a GL5 oil in the manual trans.
