Interior door panel

Hi Everyone
Purchased my TRD sport in May and roughly has 2400 kms, not miles, on the odometer.
Lately I noticed scratching on the drivers side interior door panel from reaching over to close the door. I've also noticed the panel is starting to look worn turning white. The panels are black.
This seems to be unusual for it to happen with very little use.
Is it the material that is used to make them?
It's not a work truck. Used as a daily driver.
Has anyone else experienced this.
Will warranty cover this or is there something to prevent it from happening?

These door panels are very prone to scratching all it seems to take is a brush from a fingernail. Other threads here on the subject.

Best preventative measure is probably to keep your fingernails trimmed. I doubt dealer will cover repair or replacement of door panels under warranty.

The white on mine is from rubbing the panels with my hands to get the dust off, must be dry skin. It comes off with plastic cleaner. I use Meguires wipes. The scratches.....it is what it is. I just try and be careful getting in and out but they scratch easy. Not covered under warranty.

 

Have you tried some armor all for plastic . Might bring some life back into it .there is a video on utube to get scratches out with a heat dryer . If u want to take that route . Ultimately it’s a truck stuff is going to get scratched dinged .

 

No issues with scratches on my door panels. That seems to only happen on the soft plastic around the shifter.

I have had discoloration from dead skin or whatever. I just wiped it away. 15000mi and no issues.

You're right, it doesnt take much. I've never had another vehicle that had panels scratch this easily. A bit disappointed in the material used.
I'll try to be a bit more cautious I guess.

That's the only issue I have with mine after 2 years and 23,000 miles, so feel that's pretty good considering issues some have with new vehicles.

 

Someone on here recommended this and a soft cloth and buff it in. I bought some but haven’t tried it yet.

I recommended it, use a little, let it dry and you will be amazed. May need a second coat and re apply as time goes on. It works for me.

What material did they use and how much did it run you if you don't mind me asking?

 

It is referred to as "faux leather", but its really vinyl, albeit, a very high grade vinyl. I went over and picked it up from a company called keystonbros.com. They have offices all over the USA. They have a great website where you can see what they offer. This was not cheap thin vinyl. It is thick and will not fade or crack. I heard about keystonbros because a friend of mine works there, albeit, he works in the office in Atlanta GA. I went to the office in San Francisco CA to actually pick up mine. However before I did anything, I went to a local auto upholster who I showed in the video. He has been in 'da bidness" for over 30 years, and is truly an artiste. I talked it over with him as to what I wanted to do. He was backed up but he told me if I wanted to get the vinyl myself, to let him know when I got it and he would work me into his schedule. It took about three weeks, later, but he called me and I brought over the rear door panels first, as that was what we agreed on. I took the panels off myself because I wanted to save money, and I didn't want to drop off my truck for several days for them to do everything. I watched youtube videos that show how to take off the door panels, and it is really easy, so I am glad I did it myself. I also watched youtube videos that showed how to remove the center console and armrest and I had them do that too. When he finished the rear panels, he called me to bring the front panels, and he would give me the rear panels at that time. That is how I got the picture of him holding one original door panel, untouched, and the newly covered panel, side by side. That right there is enough to me, to get it done, as you can really see the dramatic difference! Now, I chose the colors I did because I wanted it to somewhat brighten up the interior, but they have a wide variety of colors to choose from. Anyway, long explanation, but to answer your question, the material cost me around $250, and the labor to do everything cost me $1400. It was well worth it to me, for my own peace of mind, as I totally hated the original all black everywhere interior! But the bonus is when I go to the dealer, or when I am pumping gas at the gas station, and people see the interior as my door is open! I have had several people in tacomas, come up to me there, and just oohing and awwing over how good it looks!
