Can you run this tune with regular 87 octane?

Just a quick report/review after 1000k on KDMax 6. Truck is running absolutely perfect! Shifting points are perfect. @PapaRee really knocked it out of the park with this one. With all versions of OVtunes that I tried they all sort of reverted back to running/shifting like absolute crap. KDMax 6 seems to have fixed all the issues i was having and the truck has not reverted back to running like crap after putting miles on it. Best money I ever spent on this truck!!

My experience exactly with OVTune's. It would run pretty good for the break-in period (500ish miles) with less gear hunting and decent mpg, then it would settle right back into gear hunting and poor fuel economy.

2000+ miles on the KDMax and still pulling strong. My fave thing about the KDMax is not the increased mpg, or even the smoothness of the shifting - it's the almost complete absence of gear hunting even in dirty headwinds. That alone makes the tune worth it - the other stuff is icing!

I agree 100%. I've tried all of the KDMAX6.0 tunes, except the "wife tune" and I've settled on the LT Prem version, as being the right fit for me. Responsive, solid and smooth! My new '21 TRD Off-Road now drives as good as it looks. Thanx PaPaRee.

I’ve reported previously on how well this tune works in D and Perf (D+ECT) mode (neck snapper) and how it took a lot of tweaking by @PapaRee to get to my final version, a custom KDM6 with Wife Tip. The only other thing left to try was towing (S4+ECT). I took my travel trailer for a bit of a run yesterday with the KDM6WT custom tune. Trailer was at 3200# and truck was at max payload. Truck is stock gears, wheels and suspension (with Hellwig Helpers for the leafs). No surprise, everything was spot on. In fact this tune is very close to gear lock in 4th gear with the smarts to just unlock the TC (light pressure) instead of downshifting one gear. I’m towing on flat land with the majority of rise in the road is just an overpass. So, If I need a lower gear for slowing down or climbing anything substantial, I can downshift manually and that works well.

Trans pan temp levelled off at 188 on the way out, a few degrees less than having towed with a different tune. On the way back I pinned the atf cooler t-stat open and saw 168 as the nominal pan temp.

After 3 years my truck is operating properly. Thanks, Kreg. Now, back to driving around, smiling ! :woot:

The reg. throttle or what I'll call "full throttle" tune is very responsive and strong (both of which are nice ) but I found it to be a little too jumpy off the line to suite my taste & style of driving, with a pretty much stock Taco. Also, for whatever it's worth, I've always found over the years that my Tacomas run and perform better on (91Octane) premium fuel. Better gas mileage too. But HANDS DOWN these KDMAX tunes make for the best driving experience I've ever had behind the wheel of a Tacoma, and I've owned several.

Another advantage to KDMAX that I've not seen mentioned on this thread is cold startups.

In stock form cold startups were atrocious, idling higher than any vehicle I've owned and taking a long time to settle down. On KDMAX startups behave like a normal vehicle.

Currently I am considering 87Octane. Any huge benefits of 91Octane that I should be aware of, that make it work the upgrade and increased fuel costs?

It's totally based on personal preference. Try the different Tunes (on both 87 & 91 Octane) and see which you prefer. FYI--I'm also a big fan of improved air flow/movement (via K&N Air Filter and a Catback exhaust system) as a way of improving both performance and fuel economy.

Agree. Mine starts about 1150 rpm then shortly drops to 1000, shift into D and drive on. Next time I’m idling in P or N it’s at 600.

Any notable differences between the LT and SLT you can share? Thinking about deciding between these two.

I can’t recommend ‘cause I don’t know if prolonged (realatively) low pan temp might not be good. However it appears to be good for the towing application.
Just to add to my data collection, I left it pinned and untrailered and right now the pan temp is 155, normal city driving.

I'm stock and use 91 octane on the 87 tune.
LT, I got used to it and could start from a start smoothly. But there was a spot between 10-20 mph where I would let off the gas...then it was difficult to smoothly transition back on the gas. The SLT fixes that and is adequate from a stop for me. That's my experience between the two.

Both are great elsewhere and the same.

The best way I can describe it is that I found the PremLT tune to be more pedal responsive or sensative than the PremSLT tune (from a stand still) without being jumpy or jerky. Again, all of KDMAX6.0 tunes are an amazingly huge improvement over what Toyota sells. If you can, get the vFtuner, tune pack and tactrix cable so you can experiment with the different KDMAX6.0 Tunes.
