What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Nothing a toggle switch inline with the rear couldn't solve. At that point though you may as well run independent switches.

 

Yo dawg, I heard you like switches...

Would you folks go through the trouble of replacing a Land Cruiser-style switch if your truck already had that? Or is this more of a "why create a limitation you don't need to" thing?

 

If I wanted to make my FJ80 switch have independent front and rear I would add a secondary switch that would disable the rear. I wouldn't bother starting over with two new switches. If you are starting from scratch then you don't have this issue unless you are dead set on using a Land Cruiser switch.

 

For those of you ( @Dan8906 , @Phessor )who went the Rago Fab route for Bed Stiffeners, what did you use for the bed side of the bracket since we don't have existing bolts like the 2nd+ gens? Curious if they included additional hardware for that or if it was an extra trip to the local fastener store to complete install?

 

I have them installed and they gave me enough hardware for all the holes

 

Did you use anything for added support on the underside of the bed or was it simply a washer/nut? Thx.

I’ve found that I have more stability climbing loose rock hills with ruts and holes if I use just the front locker.

 

That makes sense. I wonder why they built this limitation into earlier Land Cruisers.

 

You can disable it, there's a couple wiring mods to maneuver around it. Front lockers on Toyotas run the risk of grenading the ring and pinion in reverse due to the high pinion setup, so Toyota has a sticker staying how it should be a last resort in general to engage the front locker.

 

Finally got my 4Runner wheels mounted. All said and done was $200

 

Dupli-color? Looks great. I've got the same wheels waiting to be painted, and gunmental is on my short list.

What did you do with the Toyota logo in the rear center caps?

 

Even for the rear locker in the Tacoma’s there’s a placard stating that it’s only to free yourself from being stuck. I feel like you just have to be careful and cognoscente of the loads you’re putting on the drivetrain in your particular situation. My experience has been that most of the time if I get stuck, the locker isn’t going to help me any. Actually happened to me today...

I would have made it through that drift too if my dog didn’t decide to stop and take a shit in the middle of it. Buried it to the frame. That pickup is getting a winch ASAP!

 

Just painted the center caps to match. Its nice to have a buddy who sand blasts - helped the paint stick. I did 2 primer coats and 4 coats of rustoleum flat soft iron, no clear coat

 

locking the axle while using the traction matts helps a lot. just fyi.

I’ve also discovered that my cheap ass Amazon traction boards only grab mud tires or very aggressive all terrains. The lugs on the Laufenn x fit tires leave some to be desired for anything more than your average forest service road.
