Well from all that I think Toyota filter has the best design hands down. :D

The one flaw with the factory filter is the bypass valve is on the top. Than means when the filtere gets clogged up or you really get on the gas the clean oil will pass over the outside of the dirty oil filter and pick up the filtered particles from the outside of the dirty filter and re-contaminate the clean oil. Also I am not sure if the antidrain back filter on OEM is made from silicone wich handles the heat better. WIX K&N out perform the OEM in every aspect except surface area. Fram SUCKS.. OEM VS WIX or K&N.. I think I would need more info to deside wich is better... but for the price I am leaning toward OEM... The bypass valve really makes me want WIX or K&N..

Most bypass valves are on the tops of the filters, and Im not so sure it makes that much difference, as the contaminants are caught in the media, and not easilly washed away. Also, How hard you get on the throttle has no impact on weather or not the oil bypasses the filter. THe bypass valve function, is to provide a flow of oil to the engine if the filter is clogged.

I have dealt with this issue in the past as a partsman for a large fleet. The logic was that with regular maintenance, the less expensive filters are more than adequate. As long as the filter met the manufacturers spec.

The one and only issue we ever had was when a new powerstroke diesel was destroyed and the cause was determined by the local Ford dealer to be the substandard air filters that we were buying. When the equipment manager brought this "substandard filter" back to confront the parts manager we cleaned off the dirty filter to show him the manufacturer...MOTORCRAFT. (They were the cheapest!) Ford replaced the engine.

I agree that I would not make that much of a differance on the contaminants in caught in the media being washed back into the oil but I believe that over time if you didnt change your oil for a while it could be a problem. That being said if you change it every 3 thousand even the crappy oil filter would probably work good. I may be wrong but i was under the impression that under really high RPM's that the bypass valve opens because the oil pressure is increased just like under low rpms if it is clogged.

Agreed... but since the OEM filter is one of the better and cheaper ones I think it would be the best one if you are trying to save money..

As Chris points out pretty much all are with valves on top.
If filter clogs and bypass valve opens there is enough oil pressure to pick up the biggest debris into the engine. I would bet filter gets its walls wiped clean when that happens.
There is only one bypass valve between pump and oil filter and its set to pretty good pressure. oil pump is "hardwired" to engine which means more RPMS = More oil flow/pressure. With cheap filter there is possibility bypass valve opening prematurely and staying open.
Filters do get clog. Its hard to pinpoint when they do because it depends on so many factors and its not something visible with out adding extra gauges. But crappy fuel, dusty environment, and crappy oil will shorten filter maintenance interval.

The bypass valve only works if the filter becomes clogged, or restricted. RPM of the engine doesnt cause the oil pressure to become high enough to require bypassing the filter.

all true.. but WIX and K&N bypass valve are on the bottom.. dollar for dollar OEM best buy.. I would need some tests but I think the WIX would out perform OEM because of the bypass valve.. Prob not measurable enough to make it worth the extra $.. this is a very good thread and I have learned a lot.. I am swithching to OEM.. FROM FRAM!..

Chris4x4, are TRD filters available in your area? The TRD filter has a welded nut on top and looks suspiciously like the K&N. I wonder if it's in fact inferior to the regular OEM filter.

This factory project X-Runner still uses the regular OEM filter, despite all the other upgrades, including maybe even dry-sump lubrication:

The only way to judge a filter based on the bypass valve, is weather or not it leaks. If you change your filter with each oil change, your filters bypass valve should never be excorsised. Once again, the bypass valve only comes into affect if the filter is plugged, or severly restricted. Your better off gauging a filter by the media in which it uses to filter the crap out of the oil. More media = can hold more crap, without plugging up.

I dont have access to the TRD filter yet.

Great! Thanks for spending the time and money for everyone to show what is actually in an oil filter.

not to single you out but if there is a filter that you or anyone else would like to see added to the list why not man up and send chris the money or the filter? i know someone else sent him some. $5-12 isn't that much during an oil change but for this purpose it adds up fast.

    thanks for doing this chris

I sent Chris 30 dollars worth of oil filters so that we can all learn and know what goes on inside these filters. I would like to send him some more, from Napa, O'Reillys, Carquest, to make sure OEM really is the best or if we can at least find a comfortable substitute. For now, OEM Is a Definate win. :D

I'm not sure if this site was discussed; but it does mention the Toyota in comparison.
