I believe all 2016s and select 2017s that didn’t get the inter-layer frame sealant at the factory.

Having said that, this is all based on what my dealer told me, so take that as it is. Could be bullshit told to me because they wanted to bill Toyota corporate for a service they didn’t actually perform on my truck. I don’t know for sure.

Calm your tits man. I could be wrong lol.
Check your toyota owners page for the exact details before we start making out.

Turns out it is region dependent. My region does end at the end of this year. Your region may differ.

I will call out Toyota on a sub-par effort to paint their truck frames. My Ford F-150 sees lots of gravel miles and I do zero maintenance on it as it’s a leased work truck. The Ford is basically rust-free, after two years, even at the welds. Tacomas rust at the welds as they sit at the dealers lot. There is no comparison between Ford’s e-coated frames and Toyota’s weak attempt to paint the frame black with half a can of rustoleum.

Is this just an issue in the northeast and coastal areas? Salt the real issue?

I have two 2012 Tacos, one from Tennessee and one from Utah and after crawling under them to look they seem no more rusty than any other vehicle where I live and I've never seen a failed frame from here.

They did mine in under an hour. One bolt on each side. 10 minutes work tops.

I guess I need to take a trip to the dealer one day and go talk to them to find out what they need to do.

Well we sure had a lot of them at dealers here in connecticut. The salt deicing highway sprays used here are like battery acid on them. Just painting the frame with a coating of black paint doesn't cut it. Even dealers here will tell you that. I had a tundra for 19 years that i used fluid film on every year,...while the frame was still rusty looking, at least it was solid. Its your responsibility if you plan to keep these vehicles many years.

That's what I would think, my '96 here in Va is still rust-free after 25 years (or at least free of any rust that matters). I believe I read that '18s an later aren't covered because they received rust treatment at the factory?

After I left the dealership with my new 2020 last year, I immediately put it on the lift and doused the underside in Fluid Film. I do the same with all of my other vehicles and they all look like the day they were brought home. I highly recommend anyone to do it if you keep your vehicles more than 2-3 yrs. I'd much rather deal with a messy/slimmy underside than corrosion any day. Makes life easy if you do your own maintenance and don't have to fight rusted hardware.

Toyota will tell you they have done their part, but its still your responsibility to do more if keeping these trucks many years...dealers here have told me that. I've lived in the rust belt, and seen what it does to any vehicle thats not taken care of well as far as the undercarriage goes. Rust doesn't discriminate when its comes to iron/steel.

My 2016 went in for frame inspection and oil change. They gave me an appointment in July for undercoating and drain plug replacement. They even are giving me a loaner. Very similar to the total frame replacement on my old 2003 taco. But just a spray since the frame inspection showed no real issues. They even took pictures and sent to Toyota. Once coated they retake pictures. Again it would be far cheaper to spray BEFORE shipping.
