Getting started on the case swap today. I’m about to run out for lunch and a transmission jack so I don’t crush myself trying to get it out by myself.

Don’t be ridiculous. I do have some other stuff to tend to though. I’ll replace the u joints in the front driveshaft since it’ll be spinning all the time now. Have to replace studs on the Y pipe since they snapped upon removal, as expected. And finally found a crack in my transmission crossmember I’ll need to weld back together.

I guess those things are more important.

I don't know what Toyota makes their exhaust hardware and flanges out of, but it sucks.

Going to harbor freight for their cheap transmission jack proved to be the right move. Was easy peezy getting it out by myself.

Ahh yeeee. I’m going to stop for the day. I have to open up both cases and swap some parts around and I really don’t want to be rushed while doing that, since I need to pick my son up from daycare soon.

He’s been in daycare for the past 3 months now, ever since my wife went back to work. I have to go into the office occasionally so we needed childcare for him. So now we just goes M-F and I use normal office hours to work on the truck

Swapped around the input shafts today on the cases. It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, I just took my time. Had a minor hiccup that required me to reopen the case but it’s all squared away now. It’ll get mounted tomorrow and I’ll get started on the shifter.

I got the case mounted and shifter reworked. It’s a little close to the trim in 4LO so I’m going to tweak it a bit tomorrow. Looking like I’ll be all wrapped up by Friday.

So whats the purpose of this? Just manual engagement of the transfer case? Any other benefits?

That’s pretty much it. Get rid of the electronic actuators so the system is overall more reliable. You can also twin stick it, meaning you can do 2wd/4wd and hi/lo independent of one another, making 2lo very easy.

edit: I should add the case was only $300 shipped, cheaper than one might think

That was my next question. I have the 2lo module which i use all the time. I'm assuming the twin stick is some sort of mod to change the engagement of the tcase?

This would negate that completely since what I’m doing eliminates the 4wd ecu. If you were to switch to the fj case twin stick, you would get even easier engagement of 2lo

and yes, you open the case and grind down a couple nubs and that’s it

    • replace front driveshaft u joints
    • Mount t case skid
    • Seal floor
    • Make/modify shift boot
