Couldn't agree more. You don't want any one of those movers to think there are guns in that box. Make it look like typical boring shit and ship it as fast as possible home... Or send em to me

My Dad had a lifelong friend moving to Alaska. He loaded up a tractor/trailer and didn’t declare what it was. One of the movers dropped a box and it split open with ammo dumping all over.

The moving company made him open every box before reloading on the truck. Ammo had to stay. I came home from a deployment and my Dad said “if you want to go shooting, just go to the garage and grab whatever and go nuts.”

The garage was packed wall to wall with ammo. My brother/friends had one hell of a time in the Montana mountains for 25 days.

IDK what routes you're taking but the best way to not have any issue is to not speed too much lol.

Other than that, like others said: Put them in gun bags/cases in your truck bed or trunk. And then keep the Ammo separate from them inside the truck. That's at least Ohio's weird laws for permit-less transport

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
I wouldn't say a g-damn thing to the movers about them. Just have them broken down and packed in a nondescript box marked "garage" or "basement" and not worry about it.

You're gonna get screwed trying to ship them FedEx. I could be wrong, but I think they are the only ones who ship firearms. At least that's what a gunsmith told me a few years back.

You're talking 3 rifles and a pistol. It's not as if you're trying to move 20 or 30 guns. And tens of thousands of rounds of ammo. You'll be okay.

Since you've got a moving company, and you won't be driving, this may help: I flew with mine from CA-TN, handed TSA my keys to the locks to look at em in their cases at LAX, cleared, got them when I got here at BNA. Super easy. Unfortunately I had to give away a bunch of ammo, cause I couldn't figure out how to efficiently get it here, as most shipping companies don't legally ship. Lucky day for my friend, ended up with a few cases of my ammo.

I was going to say ask the moving company if it is a PCS move. They usually have provisions for that kind of thing.

    That’s why I’m here
I can take it off your hands . But seriously with the current ammo situation you could probably make some money off of it. Then slowly rebuy when you get where you’re going.

Piece of cake I travel with long guns and pistols on airlines frequently.

Get a case for the long guns slip the pistol in and ask the agent for a firearm declaration. Check the case and get it on the other end.

I've never been charged extra (though I pretty much exclusively fly Alaska airlines)

Depends on the airline. I've never been charged a special items fee for firearms.

Have you flown with multiple long gun cases at once? That's usually when they kick in, although, you're right, it is airline dependent.

I'd suggest to contact the airline. I'm sure you are not the first to travel with weapons.

You will need to check them. They won't be allowed in Carry-On luggage.
Magazines and ammo may need to be separate from the weapon.

Airlines usually only let you take two boxes of ammo. How much are we talking about here? Honestly its not that far of a drive. Just ship one car and make the trip. I've PCS'ed cross country 5 times now I always had my guns/ammo with me.

For everyone else afraid of running afoul of any local jurisdictions, don't be. You're covered under federal law.

Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 aka “The Peaceable Journey Law”
This act allows a person to transport a firearm through states in which he or she does not hold a valid permit, as long as he or she may lawfully carry (whether by permit, constitutional carry, etc.) in the state of origin as well as the destination. The owner of the firearm must be in transit and not stay in the state where possession would be illegal. Furthermore, the firearm must be unloaded and contained in a locked box or out of the driver’s reach, unless state law allows otherwise. In some states, the drivers must pass through the state without stopping, and in others only short stops are tolerated. Consult the USCCA’s Concealed Carry Reciprocity and Gun Law Map to determine what laws apply to you for every state along your route.

The act does not allow the owner to use his or her firearm for defense during transit.

Did you look at doing a Dity move? I did one once when I PCS’d cali to Virginia. Pocketed some extra money. I don’t know how much you are moving but if you’d might be able to bring everything and the ammo.

Put them in the back seat, cover them up, keep a loaded one close by, start your engine, grab gears and go. If you get pulled over, it's all about yes Sir, have all documents ready, don't be an asshole, and you won't have any problems. Seriously, don't worry about it. I run anywhere from 7 to 11 different states each year with a loaddd 45 in the center console. Never been stopped. Good luck and be glad you're getting out of California, it's a failed state anyways.
