I like knowing what my MPG is "it's just a truck" doesn't really mean anything, is it special? I want to know my AT temp also. A drop in MPG for a unknown reason is a good indication that there is something wrong.

that's someone thats missing most of the point. Obviously all of us can easily afford the gas. This is the second gen forum right? Id hope if you bought a 20-30k truck ur in the 6 figure range or need it for your job.

Because you can afford to waste something doesnt mean one should. Thats just selfish.

I've owned this truck since 9/08. Soon after I bought it I began moinitoring the mileage and I always averaged 18-20mpg on 89 octane. The last few fill-ups have sucked- down to about 16mpg. I'm at a loss

No offense but that is about as ridiculous of a response as I have ever seen. I don't live my life worrying about gas mileage. These are PICKUP trucks. They have the aerodynamics of a cardboard box. People who are so worried about saving 2 dollars per fillup should buy priuses or jettas or electric escapes and then they wont be on internet forums whining about bad gas mileage. Seriously. What did you expect? Why spend so much time obsessing over somethign when you could have made a better financial purchase if gas mileage and saving money was your main concern. Not to offend anyone but I find it ironic that the biggest complaints on any truck or offroad forum is gas mileage. What did you expect? No aerodynamics, heavy weight due to beefirer components and armor, and utility. You were better off buying a prius for 20K to commute with and a 3-5K beater truck to haul stuff or offroad with.

i agree with ya...what one does with hes own money, or anything for that matter, wasteful or not, is not selfish...spending what you earn is your right. do you stand outside casino's damming the people for wasting money gambling when it can go to a charity?

It seems that gas mileage is a big issue even if we can all afford it, perhaps everyone suspects that it should be better for the size of the vehicle and I agree. My 68 Buick Electra with a 430ci engine used to get 15 around town and I squeezed 24 out of it once on the highway and the trunk was about the size of the box on a Tacoma, it was even good in the snow. 30 years later my Tacoma gets 18, just doesn't seem right that some old carberated beast weighing 3 tons gets better mileage than a modern fuel injected small truck even if it is a 4x4. The Tacoma gets only marginally better mileage than my old full size Jimmy and that truck would go anywhere so long as the body didn't fall off from all the rust. To me mileage is more an issue for the range of the vehicle than the cost.

The new F-150 EcoBoost with about 420 lb of tq. will get a slightly better mileage (according to ford speculations and EPA) than our tacomas, even if the truck is much bigger and heavier. And THAT is my problem, when bigger pickups that used to be less efficient are now better than our overpriced Toyotas.

"It's not light on talent, either: the massive torque means some versions of the EcoBoost-equipped F-150 will tow 11,300 pounds. As for fuel economy, Ford's predicting class-leading gas mileage, though the final numbers won't be released until early next year, when the EcoBoost F-150 goes on sale. A 20-percent improvement we discussed with various truck engineers could mean an EPA rating in the 15/21 mpg range, beter than most V-8/automatic trucks from Toyota, Chevrolet and Dodge."

only problem i have with all of the big pickups other than dodge, is you cant get a 1/2 ton with a stick shift anymore .... but yes the ecoboost i think will kick ass.

    anyhow, from the jokes thread

A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Americans drink on average 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that on average Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon!

LOL @ all the "manly men" who shouldn't even be in this thread if they don't care about THEIR gas mileage. I love the guys that are so big, bad, and better than anyone else you make my day. stir

also there are class C RV's that get better gas mileage. Now who has the bigger BOX?

That just proved my point, if you KNOW there are class C RV's that get better gas mileage and you still went out and bought a tacoma and now you are whining about gas mileage, the onus is on you. You have a choice in this country, take responsibility for your choices..... or do something about it, design and manufacture your own auto. Good day to you

OK, there are tons of people on this forum with great advice, very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. To all of those, this comment isn't towards you. To the rest, to the ones who say "oh who gives a shit about gas mileage, if you care about gas mileage go buy a Honda Fit or a Prius" then you are just an absolute closed minded moron. Oh, and this goes for the bonehead who believes you have to make $100K a year or more to own a taco... if that was the case, then your Taco would cost you more than $100K because the rest of us couldn't afford it.

My point here is, it's one thing to buy the Tacoma, get the mileage you should, then bitch about it. But for instance, in my case, the window sticker said "16 - 20" and I'm getting 21. So I'm ecstatic there. But when some people make comments like "quit worrying/bitching/asking about gas mileage, its a Tacoma!" That's just as ignorant of a comment as GWB "The Google".

Just because we own a truck doesn't mean we have to "give up" and quit worrying and pursuing better gas mileage. If that is the case, then why make new models every year? Why doesn't Ford/GM/Dodge just sell 1970 model trucks every year....

What if you paid $40K for your taco? So what? right, it's a truck? That's just stupid ignorant way of thinking.

Nothing is wrong with getting (or wanting to get) better gas mileage on ANYTHING you drive. It's one thing to pursue better mileage (which is what most of us do) and another to bitch about wanting something unrealistic (like 30 MPG on a 4.0).

I'll get off my soapbox here in a second, but some of you guys make it seem like its a crime to try and save a penny or two while trying to better the world.

I think absolute moron would be the people who actually believe the window stickers are accurate representations of real life driving and situations and expect to get that kind of mileage under all circumstances. I bet they are the same people that truly believe the government is here to help them and rely on them to protect them and tell them how to think and react. I can't wait to see how many people's heads explode when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon, it is coming. Life is tough, wear a helmet!

OK just purchased my 2011 TRD O/R Tacoma just about 3 weeks ago and first tank of gas used neted me 329 miles @ 17.1 gallons to fill = 19.23 MPG. So far I'm half way through my second tank @ 192 miles. I have a total of 570 miles on the truck .... I'm happy with my MPG so far...My last rig, a 2008 Ranger V6 4L 4x4 averaged 15 MPG.
