Hello everyone, first time on here and long time tacoma owner and lover..anyways...I recently took my tacoma mudding and I've been having problems ever since. The 4x4 light constantly flashes and then randomly goes of when I'm driving to work and stuff. As far as I know the 4wd is not engaging and does not go on or off when I do the steps your suppose to do to make it turn off. It just seems to have a mind of its own. I did a little bit of trouble shooting and discovered the vacuum line to the actuator was disconnected partially because of my lift because the lines were not extended and also probably slipped off because of the mud I went through snd the power washing I gave the whole engine compartment and every other part of the truck after. Since I've replaced the vacuum line I thought that was the problem, and the light went off after about 5 minutes of driving then when I get in my car and start it up again the light comes on and continues flashing while it's in H2. I also took the connecter directly off the actuator and cleaned it with brake cleaner and it didn't seems dirty or wet from last weekends trip. If anyone has any advice on what to do or anything please help me out...thanks for taking the time to read this, please let me know if you can give me some advice

Most likely mud and water entered the actuator through the missing vent hose (vac hose).

That is definitely a possibility. Do you think that would be the reason it thinks it's trying to go in 4wd but its not? It's just malfunctioning the actuator? Should I replace the actuator or what?

Are you willing and able to remove, clean and lube the actuator?

UPDATE ON FIXING THE TRUCK: You guys were right, the breather tube had sucked in a TON of mud cause the selenoid to not work properly and bring it back to 2wd or 4wd.
I'm very happy that that was the problem and it wasn't something deeper and more complicated. Only little problem I came across but was easy to fix was that the new actuator was in the position for it being in 4wd and the truck was in 2wd. So you have to take the 5 screws out and twist the gears so the U shaped grabber thing can be in the right position for it to go back in correctly.
It went very smooth except for when I forgot to put a drain pan under the actuator to catch all the diff fluid that came out and went all over the floor lol if anyone has questions about doing this, feel free to ask. Took around an hour to do with the right tools.
Thanks for the advice guys and hope to hear from you guys soon!

Glad you got it figured out! Usually, diagnosis is the hardest part.
Thanks for letting us know the fix!
