Where did you end up running the wiring from the brake light unit to the SP brake light wiring? Was looking at wiring mine up tonight but I'm not seeing an obvious way to route the wire from that compartment into the box/canopy.

Considering how much mud was in there it's a good thing there isn't a pre-drilled hole : )

 

Going camping for the wife’s birthday this weekend. We plan on camping by a stream, so with some help from my aunt who can sew much better than me, we got the first bug screen in. It has magnets down the middle to keep it closed after yo go through it.

I’m going to try and get at least one side screen rigged up this afternoon before we leave.

 

any chance you can snag some interior images of how you strung it up in there?

 

Ya, I can do that this weekend. It’s just ugly adhesive velcro that came with the screen.

i understand the bug screen idea as a concept, but do you plan on just sitting inside the whole time while you're camping and/or sleeping with the doors open?

 

Not to speak for @ScenicCityOverland but this a path we will likely take as well. With our boys sleeping down below from time to time, we absolutely would have the doors open while sleeping in decent to good whether particularly when it's warm or could use some extra ventilation.

 

I'll speak to that. With the fold/sliding bed option on the SP you can actually open up the floor space to make a small indoor room, or should I say mosquito escape. Bunches of places we travel and camp this is necessary and it's one of the things I loved about the Sportsmobiles and vans I had.

For $30 and taking up virtually no space it will certainly make my lady happy having this option available. She gets eaten by bugs and I never get touched. I've always told her it's because I have no blood, just basically caffeine and alcohol flowing through my veins.

 

You might be surprised how often you need an escape from both bugs and or weather. My wife and I often travel for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. We can’t always choose the weather or find the perfect camping solution. When it’s raining, or the bugs are eating you alive it nice to have a place to escape that is protected. And as others have said it’s really nice for ventilation.
Often in the mornings when we are on a road trip I get up before my wife and start making breakfast. If it’s something simple like oatmeal I I can quickly make it while still sitting inside the truck, then hand breakfast up to my wife while she’s still waking up. With the bug screen in place I can open the rear hatch and get good ventilation without being eaten alive.
Also we live in the south and love to camp by water. That often means we have to deal with bugs in the evenings. But by leaving the tail gate open we get good ventilation without attracting 1000 mosquitoes into the camper. For some reason the translucent roof really tends to attract bugs. They will come inside and then just stick to the ceiling. Nothing worse than laying down to find the entire roof covered in little biting insects.
When we head to Alaska here in another year and a half we want to have an escape from the state bird. (mosquitoes)

So long story short, no we definitely don’t just sit inside the camper. Lol

Hey Alex, would you be willing to post how you modified the screen here or on your build thread? Inquiring minds want to know. I can do most any mod but I don't sew. I'd have to rely on my 15 year old daughter for that.

I am currently staring at a bunch of bug net trying to contemplate a temporary solution for the sides….

 

word - decent explanations. not convinced that it will keep bugs out fully since it's not a completely sealed box, but i guess any little bit helps.

we're lucky in the pnw - bugs are rare.

 

Or you’ve just been lucky. Lots of places we camped out here in OR had mosquitoes. Especially near lakes, creeks and rivers.

 

It’s pretty well sealed up, but ya it’s lot better than having a 4 foot opening no covered in screen.

 

more selective than lucky. As a raft guy and fisherman, I try to avoid stagnant water in general

 

For those with the SP and switch from the GFC, did you notice the increased weight when off-road?

 

I think I’m the only person that has made that switch. I can’t tell the difference. I think it’s about 50 pounds heavier, so not really noticeable.

 

anything you miss on the gfc?

I’m trying to decide between the 2. The quality of the SP is very appealing but I also like the price/weight/looks of the GFC V2.
