It's not a pain in the ass, it's therapeutic. it's Rewarding. It's man and machine as one. It's invigorating. And you AT guys can't do this..........

I drive a car that's a manual 4 speed and I wouldn't want to shift 14 more times. That is a pain in the ass to ME

For me its about control. I see things down the road an AT can't - I control the shift.

    Winter driving - control.
I can run the gears on order.....or skip shift if need to.
Shifting without the clutch.....completely doable and fun to test the skills.
Push start.....no problem. Can be a b!tch by myself but I can do it.

    1. No, but just like Ive only suffered one attempted robbery, I still carry a gun and lock my things. I mean, do you not lock your doors everyday because you don’t get robbed every day? Do you not have insurance because you don’t crash or get pulled over everyday? Just like I’ve only been stuck 3 times and I could easily go get help from someone else, Im still buying another winch for my truck, just in case.

    2. I got in a motorcycle accident once. Head first into a squatter. Nothing broken, but my bike (looked like a crushed can) and his SUV. Got a ride to the hospital.

    3. No, it wouldn’t be like saying that at all. Im not saying Im scared of getting hurt, otherwise I’d stay home because of the 1000s of ways of dying outside.

I think the big picture of my comment was absolutely ignored. The accident thing is just a small, but very real, possibility.

I think this relates more to your comment than you think. Most people don’t plan for the exception or low probability, low risk events.

I had a 17 AT, it always would search for gears on hills and I found this a bit annoying. Before 30k miles it started to clunk when downshifting to 1st, took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. I got tired of the issues and traded to a 2020 M/T, problem solved. Now I can pick my gear.

My comment was about why I prefer an AT in my everyday life with a not very common, but not impossible, situation thrown in at the end. You're outdoors, hiking, and you roll your ankle so bad you cant even stand on it. Yeah, you could work through the pain and push and that clutch in, but is it safe to drive back on a public road like that?

It looked so similar and then since it has the names and what looks like the base to a statue there I thought it might be.

Simplistic is always best in my opinion...plus I still have a regular key which is awesome ! Not a fan of newfangled push button start stuff. Lastly I knew that I was going to lift my truck and today’s electronic controlled transmissions with a larger set of tires likely will cause the tranny to search for gears even more

Fair call but consider this. For 17 of my 25 years of driving I've owned a manual shift vehicle and I have never not been able to drive home after hurting myself. I can't even count the number of times I've had to jump or bump start my vehicle or someone else's. You could be out for that same hike and leave your lights on, drain the battery. Point is you can apply an unlikely but not uncommon scenario to either side of the argument but since you mentioned paying for convenience earlier - autos are more expensive because they are more complex, therefore have more to go wrong so I think manual wins that argument.

For me driving a manual is always more fun than an auto. The flexibility on shift points alone is a winner. And I just enjoy the mechanics of the lost art of the clutch pedal.

I do appreciate the current truck’s auto trans though. In the same way I enjoy someone else cooking a meal for me even though I’d really rather do it myself.

If you wanted to stress yourself out, you can probably get over 25 mpg with the manual. Turning the engine off while rolling in neutral , then smoothly bump-starting it at any speed (even at 55mpg you simply put it in 6th, and the engine fries up with out wearing out the starter). It's like a ghetto "hybrid". If you don't mind wearing out the starter you can also turn the engine off at red lights and get like 1-5mpg more depending how much city driving you do. I guess you can also do this in an automatic too but with a manual you can get going faster if you have it already in 1st gear ready to take off once the light turns green.

Obviously breaks and power steering have no vacuum or assistance when the engine is off so quite dangerous, but when I did this in my old truck i got 24mpg (33" tires 3.0 v6 ranger 5-speed)
