What really makes my day are the guys that flash their brights at me after I pass them with my tiny ass camper. It's a rare day when it happens, but it gets a chuckle when it does.

And to answer OPs question, the hazards are a perfect response when in the taco.

    @Rock Lobster
    I figure either
a: the driver (not assuming gender) didn't see me flash or
b: is busy with a gear change or responding to someone on a squawk box

so... I don't take it personally if I don't get a thanks-flash... but I always do it, heck I do
it for standard cars / trucks ... some folks get it others don't.

It's so sad seeing how mean people are to big rigs. Seems like I'm the only nice one nowadays.

Also, one time I flashed my brights at this guy in a Chevy Cruze because his lights weren't on at night, he opened the window and flipped me off. Like okay, I'm just trying to save your life. Hopefully someone doesn't pull out in front of you because they can't see you.

I find sticking your hand out the window to thank the other driver works flawlessly.

Lol do not add to your truck. Just let the real size trucks do their thing.
Personally I just turn off and then on my headlights to let real trucks into my lane.
Plus, adding a switch to your light will probably screw up your circuits.

Depends on the truck, the best one's - it's a three position switch on the console - up is front head lights only, down is tail marker lights only, and it spring returns to normal/center. If the lights are off at the time the switch turns them on - if they are on at the time the switch turns them off.

With a smile a flash of the lights is good, with a sneer, a flip of the finger, is also good.....

For the most part, I think it's an old school courtesy that few use, or have a clue of now days. I still do it, and get the 'thanks' flash back about half the time. I remember my old man doing it when I was a kid, then he explained it to me. I always thought it was pretty cool as an unwritten rule of the road....

I've noticed and wondered this too. I was wondering if they were using the similar radar (or however it works) cruise tech, and to be nice Not cutting back in, as not to force truck being passed to brake. Or they're mostly jackoffs now.

I've always done this when interacting with commercial trucks or with folks hauling a long trailer with a pickup. I've hauled my off road trucks and it helps to know when you're past someone and are clear to move over.

typically if you are the rear vehicle, you turn your headlights on/off or highbeam on/off if during the day so the trailer towing vehicles sees you are giving him the all clear to do his business. If you are the leading vehicle saying thanks, you could let the hazards blink for 2 flashes to say thanks. no fancy switches needed in our Tacomas.

always enjoyed seeing this used on the roads but its becoming less common.

I was roadtripping with a former trucker who was flashing his headlights in the daylight to everyone in the opposite bound lane for like 10 miles to warn them of a speed trap. He kept cursing how nobody, not even other truckers, were flashing back in acknowledgement/thanks.

Nobody remembers The Old Ways, I guess.
Though, Google Maps has been pretty half decent about warning me of speed traps, accidents, and even debris.
