Or you can just coast in gear and take advantage of DFCO, works great.

be careful with push start manuals. the push start button still needs a bit of battery power for the electronic switch to switch into the ignition position. With an old fashion key, you physically close the circuit to ignition pos in the key cylinder so when you bump start that current can go right to the computer and fuel injections/plugs. ... i know from experience :(

i've had pretty awful mpg since i got the truck 4 years ago. after modding to siam and back my mileage is worse than ever. so i decided this morning to turn it all on its head and go for the worst mileage i could on my commute w/o attracting attention. today, 12.5. tomorrow i'm going for worse. long live the MTs.

you lose momentum and energy to engine breaking. If you are coasting to a red light then yes, keep it in gear and coast to the red light (fuel injectors are off) as you are going to stop anyways and don't need to maintain your speed. but if going down a steep hill or what have you , and would like to keep going (not lose speed) then coasting in gear will bleed off momentum.

if you keep in it neutral while "coasting" (no engine breaking) and have the engine still on while, you are wasting fuel keeping the engine "running"

A friend was a hypermiler. The few times that I rode with him was the pinnacle of an unfun drive. Always killing and bumping the engine. Coasting a quarter mile to stoplights. Never touching the brakes. Etc.

He also blocked off the grille and made an underpan for the entire length of the car. I half thought he might tape over the panel gaps and go all Dukes.

It's probably been discussed to death over 47 pages, but...

I bought the AT, drove it six months, test drove a MT and that was that.

It just drives much much better, period.

I disagree sir. When going down steep hills I’m always in gear. Not only you are using no fuel, you are also saving your brakes. My mpgs are great, I get advertised or better.

Being a 100% honest though, the MTs beg for a few easy mods.

Glad you clarified, I was convinced that its simply because MT drivers are better than everyone else

you indeed use no fuel. however , when you come to the bottom of the hill you lost a bit of speed (to engine breaking) and need to compensate by accelerating at the bottom (wasting gas). This is opposed to costing to neutral , and having the engine off (yes dangerous) . you can also costing to neutral, and safely have the engine idling (using a bit of fuel to keep it running safely for beaks and steering)

    3 possibilities for "coasting" :)

Not that long ago, more than half were MTs. Everyone drove them. So yeah, you have it absolutely right.

It is not a special skill or talent so much as being willing with the desire to be engaged.

It adds up. when I did this on my old truck it was noticeable. you don't realize how often you can coast (almost like using a centrifugal clutch , yet not keeping the engine idling) . try it .

This is how hybrids get such great mpgs.... it's not just that electric motor taking over . it's the fact that they shut off the gas motor a lot.

    Not sure if I follow.

So if I’m going down a steep hill on the freeway in neutral, I will have to apply the brakes anyways, correct? Otherwise you are going way over speed limit or just at an unsafe speed. IMO makes more sense to coast in gear. We have some crazy hills here so maybe that’s why it applies more to me. Look up sea to sky highway. You cannot coast in neutral down those hills, you will overheat your brakes.

I take this highway a lot.

    It was impressively annoying. LoL!

I've seen some hypermilers doing circles at empty stoplights and have been caught behind some. Think Prius drivers on quaaludes.

You referring to a regear, or something else?

My #1 want at the moment is a bent shift lever that's biased back toward me. Feels like I'm lurching forward to reach it, currently.

Short throw also seems cool, but I'm not technical enough to go mussing with something like that by myself.

IMO 4.30 gears are great. 2WD low mod and ADM are fantastic!
