Yeah, I’m loving it! I’m actually going there next weekend with another Tacoma buddy, I actually met him while camping on that lake haha.

Interior B.C. is even more fun. I took a couple of weeks off this summer, I can’t wait to go exploring.

Automatics are fine but I’ll miss shifting when it’s gone for good. It’s therapeutic, expressive, engaging (pun intended), and yes, sometimes tiresome, but most good things aren’t unalloyed.

Just noticed that is one of the Backroad Map books. Someone I met along the way suggested I explore the Chilcotin area, so I bought one when I had more time on the schedule. Now I just flip through the pages and dream

I mean ya, if you have to apply the breaks to slow down (like down that steep grade or coming to a stop light) then you should def keep it in gear and coast . saves your pads like you said, and engine uses 0 gas. But that's in the situation where you can coast AND need to slow/ stop ahead.

In the situation where you don't need to slow down / stop ahead (mild grade or flat) then the most gas saving is neutral with engine off (danger danger , but zero gas)

ya so all that BS mumbo jumbo I'm saying is summed up as "manuals give you more control"

My first gen Taco was MT. The helper spring broke and in traffic my leg would get tired haha.

I still miss it though, I just couldn't find a truck with everything I wanted + MT. Plus now I have CRAWL CONTROL (which I will likely never use).

Yep. I’ll never drive a slush box, unless I’ll have to due to medical reasons or whatever. Had one automatic silver 2003 accord (all other vehicles I had were black) and I hated that pos with a passion. The only reason I bought it was because I got a good deal from my buddy.

My buddy with a 19 OR taco says he can do everything with his AT that I can do with my MT, I just laugh... It does drive fine though.

Getting 25+ doesn’t require the stress of hypermiling. It can be achieved carrying loads and maintaining 70+mph.

Obviously if the grade is excessive you can coast in gear and possibly need to downshift and still coast in gear just as you would do in an at. Picking an exception doesn’t define every situation though. I do both on occasion, sometimes on the same grade if it changes. Manuals simply allow a few extra choices.

so daily drove the t4r all winter, just took the tacoma (mt) out of storage for the season and it feels like a rocket ship in comparison. i'm sure it's just because i'm keeping the revs higher or whatever, but it's nice

Have him try popping the clutch to get the tires to immediately start spinning in the sand, or more importantly to start a good donut.

This Crawl Control you speak of. When is it ever actually "needed", needed? I have yet to see any proof that it is much more than a nanny for the inexperienced driver.

It's absolutely perfect for the inexperienced to have a snowball chance of keeping up on a trail with the experienced driver for sure.

I have seen that situation in person. My stock Taco and a stock OR were stuck in the same melting snow. I was able to wiggle free. They went full 4Lo, locker, and MTS / CC after trying the wheel speed approach. The voodoo of the system walked them out. So, it does work nicely, but I agree with your assessment.

    It's complicated.
I wish my truck configuration had been available with a manual transmission! I hate not knowing what gear my truck is deciding to use at any given time.

There have been a few times when shin splints made driving a manual in traffic annoying but that would sometimes affect my right leg instead making driving an at in traffic not a lot different but it doesn’t take much of a difference to want whatever relief you can get.
