I made the switch as well. Had the V1 GFC and the SP is a far superior product. The craftsmanship in the tent alone is worth the switch. Have not wheeled the truck yet but I do not notice the weight difference. DCSB Tacoma SP weighs 300 with no rear window option.

 

I got a very sad email today, supply chain hit SP. they are out of some supply’s and my build is delayed

I had a v1 gfc for 2 years. IMO the v2 doesn't address any of the problems my wife and I had with the v1 camper other than the failing hinges.

Here are a few examples from our experience:


The mattress on the GFC is horrible. We've tried adding a topper, changing foam, using camping pads, and just about anything else to make it more comfortable. When you are using the camper for 2-3 weeks at a time, comfort is important. The SP uses a Exped Megamat for a mattress. It's the top rated camping mattress for 4 or 5 years straight. It's extremely comfortable.

In the GFC you have to remove a mattress panel to get in and out and there is no airflow between the top and bottom sections. This means you can't run a heater below and expect the heat to rise up very efficiently. With the SP, there is 2 20 inch panels that can be left out of the rear section to allow you to get up and down / heat to rise.

The GFC has really bad condensation problems in cold weather. That's something that can't be fully fixed, but the addition of 4 large closeable vents in the SP allow better ventilation and less condensation. They also have build in awnings to keep the rain away from the vents.

With the GFC, there is no place to run wires for solar, or install any type of switches. the SP has channels running around the entire shell with removable access doors and places to install your gear, this makes cleaning up the wiring much easier and cleaner. They also included 8 tie down points, over 30 screw down points, molle panel attachment points, and slots for installing custom gear.

The GFC uses proprietary T-Slots, where the SP is all generic parts that can be ordered or found locally. They have slots along the top of the camper, the sides, and even under the front. The inside of the camper and tent also include slots. You can customize it to your needs easily.

The GFC poured water on you if you tried to use the doors in the rain, the SP doesn't. There are no bars blocking door access on the SP.... The list goes on.


We used our GFC for 2 years, traveling across the US and up into Canada. We had months of living experience in ours. It's a good platform, but there was a lot of things that needed to be improved. IMO, GFC v2 still falls short, so I went with what I feel is a better option.

 

This is also why the Tundra SP has been delayed.

So I can't seem to find it on their site... can someone tell me what the standard T-slot nut size is for the external slots?

No, it means they don't know. I doubt it will be that long but it certainly could. They have dealt with supply chain issues on and off since the beginning as pretty much everyone in business has. Don't let this get you down.

I got the same email, not worried or concerned, it's just business these days. I have no doubt Spencer and the gang will hump it to get us our promised tops as soon as they possibly can.

 

All good tho! I still would’ve been waiting if I kept my order with Vagabond. It would be 20 months and counting lmfao

 

For tundras, it seems like a minimum of 12 weeks at this point. It’s a bummer cause I just booked Yosemite.

 

I legit took my bed rack and RTT off yesterday to post for sale. Guess ill enjoy my truck with a empty bed in the mean time lol.

 

not gonna lie its been nice having an open bed for the last 6 months but looking forward too having the camper.

 

Me too. I would still be waiting for my Vagabond Drifter, and that after being told it would arrive LAST July, then LAST November, and supposedly by THIS April. I ordered my SP in November and am now one of the lucky ones who received it just before the slowdown mentioned above.

 

Heading out to a local campsite for tonight. I cut a 6 inch folding memory foam mattress to fit perfectly in the bed of my Taco. Between that and the Softopper, tucking in at night feels almost like cheating. Another advantage of this system has been the extreme light weight, meaning I haven't had to upgrade my suspension at all. What do you all think is the minimum I could get away with to properly support the X1? I want to avoid the rear end squat or wearing out the stock leaves prematurely.

 

My taco rode pretty well with the stock suspension. The only issue I noticed was going over abrupt bumps at low speed you could definitely feel the weight on the back compress the rear suspension fully. Not an issue on most fire roads, but would be on rough roads with lots of rock and ledges. And the speed bumps at the mall : ) Longevity of leafs could be the bigger issue.

But if you aren't camping with a ton of other gear you might be able to get away with stock suspension. You can always try it out for a while and see how it goes. I might not have upgraded mine except I will be carrying a dual sport moto on a hitch rack on a lot of trips, which will definitely overload the suspension.
