Turn your Taco into a deisel? I have been on the phone with a company that has a deisel engine swap they are using with sucess. The reason I ask is I know I am not the only guy who would like to see a deisel?? Chime in fellas That being said in my talks with this company it seems I may have found a source for a direct swap engine option for the Tacomas. I do not have concrete numbers yet, but as soon as I do I will post them up. In the meantime how about some opinions on this? Would you? Why would you if so? or do you think its a waste of time? Any and all ideas welcome, and if you are interested in the origination of the idea it is from a mining company. They are very expensive trucks if you purchase the mining one (starting at $62,000) but the engine and harness price may be doable and the other work can be done by me. I am not sure if this will even pan out but I am really tired of not having deisel options, so I am going to try and make my Own option. The way it all goes together is key as well, I dont want a shoehorned pos in there that is spliced all to death. I want clean factory look with Cummins 4B 3.3 Turbo power!

 

I have always been interested in a deisel midsize pickup. That being said I am not interested in converting my solid truck into something else. I am more interested in a factory model with a deisel. Better milage than a four banger with more power than a six banger is SWEET! So I encourage you to follow through with this with the hopes that it will convince Toyota that it is time for them to bring the diesel to the states.
Would be nice to be able to buy a truck with a junk motor and drop in a deisel though! Food for thought. Please keep posting with updates.

 

If it were an option right now, I would have bought one. As far as taking out a perfectly good gas engine to do the swap, no I would not do it. If my truck is in good shape in 5 years with 200,000 plus miles (which it will have), then I will say I am satisfied with the gas.

 

Already have a diesel thats why i bought a tacoma for every day driving

Diesel doesn't really interest me unless I'd need an HD full size for towing. Then I'd buy one.

 

I would love to have a turbo diesel in my Tacoma! Of course it could depend on cost .

the US will likely never see a diesel compact / midsize again .... back in the 80s it was an option on rangers ... and i think you could get those goofy vw truck things with a diesel as well.

It would be nice but a PITA! I'm working on a B18 swap on a CRX right now and thats been a bitch, can't imagine what putting a diesel in my taco would be like! Although I was stuck in Japan for a year and they had diesel Hilux's that we used to carry parts around in. They were pretty sick to be honest and killer in the snow!

 

I would! Love my gas engine but with a diesel you have more fuel "options" which I like! I'm all about "Going Green" and diesel engines give me more flexibility when its comes to that.

Plus I could possibly tow more with my lil truck with the addition of a "big brake package"

 

Would like to see it in action! I work for VW and just saw there mid-size diesel pickup. Kinda neat even though its a VW.

 

Yup. In South America it seems that if it's bigger than a car it will have a diesel engine.

 

The 3.3 L Cummins is a great industrial motor, but I don't think it would be all that great in a Tacoma. It's heavy [553 lbs] and makes only 85 hp @ 2600 rpm and 215 lb-ft of torque at 16oo rpm. It's also a very slow revving engine. In daily driving it'd be torture. It I'm not sure what the 1GR-FE weighs but I'd imagine its at least 150-200 lbs. lighter. There is better choices out there. If I was entertaining the idea of a swap I'd possibly look into the VM Motori 2.8L 4cyl used in the 05-06 Jeep Liberty. It's a motor with a long history for durability and has excellent power numbers, 160 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The only reason Jeep stopped using it was it would'nt pass 2007 emission requirments.

If there was a diesel choice at the time of purchase I would've gotten it.

The 4.0 is a pretty damn good engine. The 3.0 diesel doesn't have enough advantages for me to convert to it. But if they'd offered it off the lot for the same price...
