not likely since it was not a Combloc caliber. The military would do that in Viet Nam against NVA or VC ammo caches, but not to their own rounds

Showed that video to my dad, can’t believe he’s still alive after that, what a story. Crazy how that round went off with that kind of pressure.

I would hazard to guess someone double charged it at the factory. We've all seen that in the last few years with various manufacturers, and since this was a war-time production round, very well could have happened.

Milsurp ammo really is a gamble, though I've never had an issue with any of it. Pretty much all of the milsurp I have is 7.62x54R, manufactured in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Maybe combloc countries just preserved their ammo better?

I do know combloc countries used corrosive powders/primers for much longer than western countries (for the most part) and those corrosive elements are more stable over time, from what I understand.

I think we can agree that proper surplus ammo is sealed well. Berdan primers and powders aren’t going to be come volatile over time. It’s not nitro glycerin.

So i just learned a little more about Project Eldest Son. While they "say" the program ended, I wouldn't doubt them started it back up. Even if we haven't, other countries have. https://militaryhistorynow.com/2016...-secret-u-s-scheme-to-sabotage-charlies-ammo/

And as for the round being combloc, there are a lot more combloc weapons in enemy hands than you know, especially if you get into frankenguns. A lot of countries would like to reduce those numbers.

If I wanted to change up one of my .308's into one of the 6mm variants, which one, and just the barrel and magazines need to change? Just a paper target gun, looking to go 600 yards plus.

Make sure the bolt face matches. Since this is ar15 thread I’m assuming you mean to switch to the 6mm creed, but the 6mm dasher and BR should fit the same bolt face as well.

I thought I would need a different BCG to fire the different cartridge.

Depends on the cartridge. Most of the short action cartridges use the .473 bolt face. The issue you run into is the pressure differences since the .308 is relatively low pressure. A HP bolt helps with a smaller firing pin diameter. That what I run and I’ve never had any primer problems. I load my ammo over max.

US military was (still is?) using .50BMG ammo with head stamps from the 1940s up until recently. They made a LOT during WW2.

Makes sense. But, SLAP rounds were developed in the 80s and rolled into service during Desert Storm. Not sure what could put a milsurp round that is maybe 30 years old over 50% over pressure though.

I picked up an AR soft-sided case, a metal 30-round magazine (to separate range metal vs non-range Magpul), added some flip up sights, threw some stuff into my new “free” range bag from NRA, and added a little “bling”.

Finally got my barrel back from pin/weld and my buddy's takeoff 1-8.5 came in same day. This thing weighs 10lbs 2oz as pictured, and I've got another 12oz of YHM Turbo K sitting in jail waiting for it.
